Lao Friends Hospital for Children (LFHC) is a non-profit, paediatric teaching hospital, providing free care to children, situated within and working closely with the Luang Prabang Provincial Hospital in Luang Prabang, Lao PDR. The average daily census now exceeds 120 outpatients and 40 inpatients daily. The successful applicant will be joining a medical team comprising two permanent expatriates and 22 Lao doctors. We work closely with the other clinical departments and LFHC is committed to providing high quality, compassionate paediatric care to all children, and training its health workers, aiming for eventual Lao intellectual sustainability in the field of child health. Luang Prabang is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is therefore an attractive place to live with a large expatriate community. Position Summary Laos Friends Hospital for Children is currently seeking a Senior Paediatrician to join our medical team.

Qualifications and Attributes:

Essential:

1) A Medical Degree (MD/MBBS or equivalent)

2) Registration to practice clinical medicine in the applicant’s home country and confirmation that the applicant is in good standing with their home medical council.

3) US Board Certification in General or Emergency Paediatrics / Membership of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (UK) / Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (Paediatrics); or equivalent postgraduate paediatric qualification from the applicant’s home country

4)Good communication and teamwork skills

5) Commitment to providing high quality, compassionate and holistic care to patients

6) Commitment to developing the clinical skills of the Lao medical staff, facilitating inclusive discussions and supporting the development of Lao clinical decision-making skills.

7) A high degree of humility, patience, and cultural awareness

8) Experience working with staff and patients from varied ethnic backgrounds

9) Able to practice and teach in English

Highly desirable:

1) Additional training in emergency pediatrics, paediatric infectious diseases, public health or tropical medicine

2) 5 years of independent paediatric practice post-residency

3) Experience practicing paediatrics in a low-resource setting

4) Experience supervising medical staff

5) Experience working with patients from ethnic minority backgrounds

6) Experience communicating with patients and families through translators

Specific Duties Include:

  1. Providing point of care coaching (such as teaching ward rounds and case-based discussions), mentorship, close supervision and assistance with clinical care to Lao medical staff in the general paediatric ward, neonatal unit, emergency department and outpatient department.

  2. Demonstrate high quality, collaborative, holistic, non-discriminatory and compassionate care to all patients

  3. Close collaboration with the Medical Director on any changes to medical policy or clinical guidelines

  4. Close collaboration with the Medical Education Director on any and all aspects of medical education.

  5. Role modelling desirable professional behaviours and leadership, teaching and management skills in daily practice

  6. Opportunity to become clinical lead for a specialty clinic or service (e.g. neonatal care, thalassaemia, emergency department), according to area of expertise or interest.
