icddr,b invites applications from suitable candidates for the position of Senior Laboratory Officer with LSSD Special Activities under the Laboratory Sciences and Services Division. The appointment will be made on a Fixed-Term basis for 1 year which is renewable depending on the performance and availability of funds.

Position Description:

Media Facility is responsible for preparing microbiological culture media, Sterilization, decontamination of hazardous laboratory wastes and preservation of bacterial stock culture. This section provides prepared bacterial culture media to various research projects and clinical laboratories at Dhaka and Matlab to maintain ISO 17025 guideline and media are used for the growth and biochemical tests required for various research activities as well as isolation and identification of microorganisms.

The Senior Laboratory Officer will report to the Manager, Media Facility and will be responsible for plan, organize, prepare, perform and supply different qualitative laboratory media with the objective of conducting high-quality research and services within the guidelines of SOP to maintain all documents related to ISO 17025 guideline and inventory/protocols, organizational values and guidelines. The specific areas of responsibilities are detailed below:

Duties and responsibilities:
Oversee Media Preparation and QC Activities:

Prepare different type of microbiological culture media as well guide the technicians preparing different media following preset SOP and GLP for Research & Service Labs’ as instructed by the Manager, Media Facility in order to maintain qualitative service of the Lab. Perform sterility control process; report growth control test results of each batch of the prepared media. Deliver QC passed prepared media to the users as per requirements. Media Facility in order to maintain qualitative service of the Lab.

Coordination and Follow-up Activities:

Maintain liaison with Supply Chain Management to receive required Chemicals, Reagents, Equipment’s, Lab wares, etc. in time and monitor proper consumption of these items for preparing different media as per requirement; Follow-up with HR for HR issues of Media Unit and Finance for budget clearance and time recovery of supplied media in different labs and out-side stakeholders in order to proper functioning of Lab activities.

Routine Laboratory Activities

Prepare different media; Deliver the prepared media to requisitioning laboratories; Ensure cost recovery of the delivered media in order to ease routine laboratory activities. Monitoring of Autoclave machine and efficacy test of Autoclaving procedure. Check and record autoclave tape control of each cycle of sterilization in order to maintain quality of media as per guidelines. Train team members to manage Biohazard waste; maintain cleanliness following bio-safety procedures and quality aspects as per ISO standard as well as laboratory waste disposal activities in order to increase efficiency of employees. Perform and conduct Lyophilization procedure and maintain culture bank.

Quality Assurance, Bio-Safety and Bio-Security:

Adhere to quality and bio-safety procedures and practices; Train newly hired junior staff on quality and bio-safety procedures in order to protect personnel from risks within the laboratory as well as maintain quality of service delivered to stakeholders to comply with standards procedure and guidelines.

Maintenance of Equipment and Inventory Records:

Contact Biomedical Engineers, Maintenance Staff of FM and Service Engineers of the Suppliers in need for repairing, installation and routine services of equipment; Keeps proper records of different stock, non-stock lab items, chemicals and reagents received and their consumptions in order to maintain proper inventory management of lab equipment’s.

People Management:

Routine monitoring and co-ordination of staffs working in laboratory, train junior staffs, students and trainees on bio-safety and QMS test procedures; SOPs and equipment operations and to develop their skills and competency. Take part in laboratory supervision in weekends and off hours in order to ensure continuous improvement of laboratory personnel. Develop a spirit of collegiality and gender diversity amongst team members.

Required experience and qualifications
Education:

MSc in Biological Sciences with good academic record.

Experience:

At least 5 years’ experience in relevant field

Excellent knowledge of Media Preparations and Management Proficient Knowledge of Media usages and requirements; Excellent Knowledge of Cost Calculation of Media and Recovery Monitoring Skills; Proven capacity of Autoclaving machine Usage and Testing Method; Excellent Knowledge of Asset Management and operation of Equipment Maintenance; Adequate Knowledge of the Bio-hazard, Bio-safety and waste Management; Sound Knowledge on Quality Assurance Standards; Very good understanding of Laboratory IT Systems. Knowledge of Laboratory Standards (e.g. ISO) Knowledge of Regulatory Requirements and Compliance

*The person assessed by the Selection Panel as most suitable for the position will be proposed for appointment. Selection among short-listed candidates will also take into account performance at interview, appropriate testing, and references.

Salary: Annual Tk. 824,820/- inclusive of house rent and conveyance allowances and other admissible benefits.

Benefits/facilities: 14.8% provident fund contribution, income tax paid by icddr,b, children allowance @Tk.1,917/- per child per month, festival bonus, contributory healthcare support including dependent spouse and children, group life insurance and subsidized canteen. Transport and daycare facilities are subject to space availability.
