IRENA is an inter-governmental organisation, mandated by governments worldwide to promote the widespread and increased adoption and sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy. In order to do so, IRENA will facilitate access to all relevant renewable energy information, including technical data, economic data and renewable resource potential data. IRENA will share experiences on best practices, and lessons learned, and regarding policy frameworks, capacity-building projects, available financial mechanisms, and relevant technologies on renewable energy.

The Office of the Director-General provides leadership to carry out the Agency's mandate and is also responsible for the efficient and effective management of the IRENA Secretariat and Work Programme. Within the context of a broad communications umbrella for IRENA, the Senior Editor and Publications Manager is responsible for editing, design, production and overall quality control for all of IRENA's publications. This involves close collaboration with the Communications Unit, which focuses on communications and marketing, including for key publication releases, as well as with other teams and divisions Agency-wide.

Under the supervision of the Chief of Staff, the Senior Editor and Publications Manager:

  • Develops and implements publications policy; finalises and adapts, as necessary, the IRENA Publications Policy and subsequent style guides and process guides;
  • Ensures appropriate editing and manages the production of all IRENA publications; promotes strategic (three-tier) publishing approach to maximise external communications impact; fosters co-ordination and highlights synergies in content between different divisions;
  • Protects IRENA brand, copyright and intellectual property; reviews copyright and disclaimer notices for all publications and related content; identifies and helps to address potential legal and governance concerns;
  • Drafts, edits and publishes promotional content, including, co-operation with different IRENA divisions and staff, all IRENA outreach and informational material (flyers, brochures, newsletter, Member Bulletin, press kits, studies, other publications); produces, edits or reviews web copy for all publications;
  • Strengthens communication of key findings; co-ordinates the dissemination of publications and other work (e.g. web tools and platforms.), as well as ensuring effective communication of IRENA's findings and work in general;
  • Promotes and optimises multilingual publishing; establishes standard, cost-effective and reliable processes for translation and independent proof-reading to make key publications and findings available in official UN and other languages;
  • Ensures consistent design and branding; integrates key visual elements in publications, web design and overall institutional branding; promotes continual brand development in co-ordination with communications team (brand officer, digital communications officer, others) and other divisions and units as needed;
  • Conceptualises and updates the website as one of IRENA's essential communications components, working closely with digital communications colleagues to optimise web design, appearance and functionality;
  • Oversees compact, flexible publications unit; manages a small in-house team (publications assistant, interns, consultants) and an extensive external consultant network for editing, design and translation; ensures necessary flexibility to address ongoing brand and content evolution, as well as to support, strengthen and plug gaps in overall communications capacity;
  • Assists the Direct Support Unit, communications team as needed with drafting and editing articles, op-eds, speeches, press releases and official statements.
  • Co-ordinates with other units in communications with Members;
  • Manages editorial tasks for IRENA publications, including short-term editorial/writing assistance, guidance on key editorial and style questions, and ensuring adequate technical and stylistic reviews;
  • Co-ordinates with the Senior Communications Officer (Chief, Communications) or other team members on communications issues;
  • Assists the communications team as needed with drafting and editing articles, op-eds, speeches, press releases and official statements.
  • Performs communication tasks and other tasks as requested or assigned.

Competencies:

  • Professionalism: Knowledge of editorial policies, practices and research techniques. Solid writing and analytical abilities with sensitivity to nuance. Firm grasp of contemporary publishing procedures, design and layout and production. Excellent ability to write/edit different types of content (publication summaries, articles, speeches) for various audiences and to spot errors and inconsistencies in a text. A proven knowledge of both renewable energy issues and the global network of the renewable energy community, including specialised media.
  • Technological awareness: Knowledge of the different technical and software tools currently available for communications.
  • Leadership: Ability to work autonomously with strong project management skills; ability to work under pressure and to set goals, make plans, define deadlines and deliver on time.
  • Teamwork: Possession of team spirit to build-up, manage and lead a team in a multi- cultural environment; proven supervisory and decision-making skills and ability to delegate responsibility; responsibility for incorporating gender perspectives and ensuring the equal participation of women and men in all areas of work.
  • Creativity: Creative and has an instinctual feeling for the art of research editing.
  • Client Orientation: Ability to maintain excellent relations with the global media, IRENA's Member states and stakeholders.

Qualifications:

Education : Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in degree in journalism, communications, public relation or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience : A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in writing, editing and print or electronic publishing at the international level. Proven experience in managing editing and/or publishing teams, including experience in staff management. Prior working experience within the field of renewable energy and familiarity with its current topics of discussion is an asset.

Language: Excellent command of both written and spoken English is essential. Knowledge of another language is an advantage.
