Office/Unit/Project Description

In September 2015, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This global “plan of action for people, planet and prosperity” is anchored on 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the agenda’s results framework that captures universal aspirations across three dimensions of sustainable development: economic development, social development, and environmental protection. The 2030 Agenda is an integrated, indivisible agenda, which balances the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainability, the success of which will depend on the extent to which coherent, evidence-based plans and policies are formulated and implemented at country, regional, and global levels.

In India, NITI Aayog has been entrusted with the role to co-ordinate the work related to the SDGs. The task at hand for NITI Aayog is not merely to periodically collect data on SDGs but to act proactively fructify the goals and targets not only quantitatively but also maintaining high standards of quality.

The institutionalization of the SDGs in India has been an exemplary project and one that has lessons for the world. The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has developed the national indicator framework to contextualize the SDG targets for the country and formalize the way in which SDG achievement will be measured. With the launch of the SDG India Index and Dashboard in 2018, India became one of the first countries to track its progress on the Goals at the subnational level. The launch of the index has sparked a very important conversation in the country and among people, on measurable progress at the state level. The three editions of the index and dashboard launched so far have been accepted by governments and all other stakeholders. The State governments have proactively led the localization of the SDGs by investing in preparation of vision documents, monitoring and capacity development, including establishing SDG Coordination Centres ( SDGCCs) in collaboration with UNDP.
