UNICEF's Office of Research - Innocenti produces publications for the web and for print. These are required to meet a high standard of quality with regard to grammar, spelling, sentence structure, clarity and adherence to the UNICEF style. To meet these standards, the publications unit supervises professional publication services, including copyediting, design, proofreading and printing.

How can you make a difference?

Purpose of Activity/Assignment: The Publications unit is seeking to recruit professional copyediting services, to support the sections with the forthcoming 2021 titles. In collaboration with the Communications Unit, the contractor will edit, copy-edit or proofread Innocenti produced materials and return them up to professional standards so that these, subject to final review by appropriate section, is ready for publication.

Scope of Work: Qualified providers are invited to submit proposals for the provision of the below described services. In consultation with the Communications Unit, the consultant will edit/copy-edit/proofread the supplied documents according to UNICEF style and requirements and to high professional standards. The text will be supplied in MS Word and will be returned in tracked changes mode. All queries will be directed to the Editorial Associate who will liaise with the authors on substantive issues. The consultant will be provided with the UNICEF Style Book.

Copyediting The copyeditor will review publications and digital products to the highest professional editorial standards. Tasks will include:

  • Ensuring accuracy of grammar, syntax and spelling
  • Ensuring accuracy and consistency in capitalization, abbreviations/acronyms, headings graphs, figures and tables
  • Ensuring terminology and United Nations country names are correct
  • Checking all biographical references and footnotes/endnotes, flagging those which do not relate correctly to the text
  • Ensuring that all elements, including the front and back matter, are included and correct
  • Where necessary, proposing language to sharpen the clarity of the text.
  • Eliminate repetition and flag any potential sensitivities (e.g. political/gender).
  • Check the accuracy and consistency of boxes, figures and tables, etc., vis-Ã -vis the text.
  • Check all references and footnotes, flagging those which do not relate correctly to the text.

Where the consultant identifies discrepancies or inconsistencies in individual texts or across the publications, s/he will use the comment feature in MS Word or pdf to highlight these to the supervisor. All deliverables must follow the style guidelines provided by UNICEF.

Duration of the consultancy

Dates by which our office will provide original texts and will receive revised text in tracked changes will be indicated for each assignment. The contractor will remain available for consultation for an additional number of days to be determined, while the revisions are being checked by the Office of Research.

IMPORTANT the supervisor and consultant will assess and agree to the time required to complete the assignment before work commences.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have...

Masters University degree in English, journalism, communications, or a related field.

  • Excellent English writing skills.
  • Firm grasp of requirements and desired extent of editing/copyediting/proofreading.
  • MS Office computer literate (Excel, MS Word).
  • Competent in the creation and use of footnotes/endnotes, bibliographies/reference styles, tables of contents, and use of tracked changes, comment and highlighter features in MS Word and pdf.
  • Experience in editing/copyediting/proofreading, as appropriate, with UNICEF guidelines or another UN organization is desirable.

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered 'staff members' under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF's policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Depending on the type and length of contract, consultants may be eligible to receive Paid Time Off (PTO) credit at the rate of one- and one-half days (1.5 days) for each full month of service, to be credited on the last calendar day of the month, and up to 17 days for a maximum of 11.5 months contract.

Payment of professional fees shall follow the 'best value for money' principle, i.e., achieving the desired outcome at the lowest possible fee. Consultants will be asked to stipulate all-inclusive fees, including lump sum travel and subsistence costs, as applicable.

Payment of professional fees will be based on submission of agreed deliverables. UNICEF reserves the right to withhold payment in case the deliverables submitted are not up to the required standard or in case of delays in submitting the deliverables on the part of the consultant
