ABOUT THE ROLE

The Transparency International Secretariat (TI-S) is currently seeking a Research Coordinator to join the Research & Knowledge Team and contribute to the implementation of two projects supporting TI 2030 strategic commitment to “hold power to account for the common good”.

Since 2003, TI has partnered with the U4 Anti-Corruption Resource Centre to provide on-demand research services on corruption and corrupt money flows to the staff of 8 bilateral development agencies through the operation of U4 Helpdesk services. As part of these services, the Helpdesk addresses the knowledge needs of the anti-corruption movement via conducting secondary desk research and developing a range of targeted research and knowledge products in a timely manner on a wide range of topics related to corruption and economic crime.

All 4 Inclusive Service Delivery Africa is a Global Affairs Canada grant over four years, from 2022 to 2026, focused on five African countries, including Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Madagascar, Rwanda and Zimbabwe. The aim of the project is to improve access to health and education services for groups at risk of discrimination, particularly women and girls. As part of this project, TI will generate a solid evidence base on the drivers and inhibitors of corruption in health and education services, particularly as it relates to groups at risk of discrimination.

A full-time Research Coordinator is needed to support the provision of Helpdesk services to development and anti-corruption practitioners as well as lead the implementation of research activities under the Global Affairs Canada grant related to promoting inclusive service delivery in Africa. Specifically, this will involve:

  • compiling on-demand and practitioner-oriented anti-corruption briefs,
  • leading the design of corruption risk assessment methodologies in the area of service delivery, and
  • designing and implementing research tools and activities to address knowledge gaps on the linkages between corruption, discrimination and service delivery in Africa.

OVERVIEW OF KEY DIMENSIONS

Role Purpose: The Research Coordinator will provide Helpdesk services to selected stakeholders and lead the development of knowledge materials and methodologies, provide thematic support to TI chapters and quality control of project outputs in the area of inclusive service delivery in Africa.

Band: salary according to TI-S internal salary structure; for this position corresponding to band PF2 salary starting EUR 40,000 gross per year depending on relevant experience

MAIN ACCOUNTABILITIES OF THE ROLE

Based in the Research & Knowledge Team and reporting to the Head of Research & Knowledge, the Research Coordinator will:

  • Produce and disseminate original materials, with a special emphasis the linkages between corruption, discrimination and service delivery to support project outputs and deliverables.
  • Conduct and coordinate secondary desk research on a wide range of corruption-related topics, including, to address the on-demand knowledge needs of the TI movement and U4 partner agencies in a timely manner.
  • Lead the development of knowledge materials, tools and research methodologies to identify and mitigate corruption risks in health and education services in Africa
  • Coordinate the implementation of research activities aimed at addressing the knowledge gaps on the linkages between corruption, discrimination and service delivery in Africa, including research design, training of researchers, provision of need-based support and guidance to national chapters
  • Provide quality control of project outputs and oversee the development of relevant knowledge materials by chapters
  • Coordinate a pool of external contributors as well as a network of leading international anti-corruption experts.
  • Promote and disseminate TI-S’ knowledge products through various platforms, channels and outreach activities (e.g. blogs, social media, workshops and conferences).
  • Contribute to the TI research portfolio by taking part in specified aspects of research project management, delivery of research tools, monitoring and quality control, and the production of publications and other outreach materials.
  • Generate ideas, develop concept notes/proposals, and activities that are aligned with organisational
  • Contribute to day-to-day work implementation, including work planning, budget management, monitoring, and reporting, ensuring that all phases are consistent with the design and delivery schedule and internal processes and procedures.
  • Stay abreast of developments relating to the area of work and be available to respond to on-demand internal and external stakeholder needs
  • Represent the organisation at relevant fora within area of expertise as needed; build relationships and form alliances with external counterparts, communities of practice and
  • Contribute to the overall functioning of the Research & Knowledge Team by providing proactive and ad hoc support where


CANDIDATE PROFILE

In order to succeed in this role, candidates will need to meet the following:

  • Masters or equivalent in a relevant field of the social sciences, such as political science, sociology, economics, public administration or a related field, with an academic emphasis on research
  • 5+ years of relevant professional experience in social research with a track record of producing operationally and policy relevant research
  • Substantive experience in research coordination in a multi-country/international setting
  • Experience in providing training, technical assistance and quality control on applied research projects, preferably in a multi-country/comparative context, with excellent attention to detail
  • Strong knowledge and experience in research design, development of tools and methodologies
  • Recognised expertise in governance and anti-corruption required; knowledge and expertise on on political economy of corruption in development settings, exclusionary effects of corruption, gender and corruption and/or service delivery, an advantage; regional expertise in Sub-Saharan Africa an asset;
  • Demonstrated organisational and project management skills with strong organisational skills and the ability to successfully manage priorities in a dynamic and fast paced environment
  • Solid writing, editing and communication skills
  • Ability to work in a team as well as independently, particularly at distance communication
  • Professional language proficiency in written and spoken English, additional languages (in particular French and/or other languages) an asset
  • Proven commitment to social justice issues and the values of Transparency International
