The Innovation and Education (IVE) Programme is a new thematic area of UNU-IAS, aiming to promote research and practices on innovative and inclusive education and lifelong learning for sustainable development at all ages. It reinforces evidence-based policy advice to translate global goals into local actions with a close alignment with the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) for 2030 Roadmap. The project, “Enhancing ICH safeguarding and transmission using ICT in Luang Prabang” (“Project”) is a 3-year project funded by the Grant for Global Sustainability (GGS), started in 2021. It aims to enhance the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) in the Town of Luang Prabang World Heritage Site in Lao PDR using information and communications technology (ICT). Its three primary objectives are: 1. to promote Luang Prabang’s ICH by developing a publicly available ICH database; 2. to facilitate youth’s active engagement in the ICH safeguarding process using digital technology; and 3. to strengthen educators’ capacity and roles in integrating ICT-enhanced ICH knowledge in teaching practices. Results of this project are expected to contribute to SDG localization in Luang Prabang by strengthening the community’s heritage safeguarding through awareness raising (SDG 11.4), promoting sustainable tourism through a collective effort between current and future artisans (SDG 8.9), and enhancing educators’ capacities to facilitate ICH safeguarding (SDG 4.7). Terms of Reference Under, the overall supervision of the UNU-IAS Director and under, the direct guidance and supervision of the Head of Innovation and Education (IVE), the Research Assistant shall perform the following tasks: 1. Provide the overall assistance in research activities of the Project, including: Translating and interpreting research materials from Lao to English and English to LaoAssist in preparing, maintaining and filing documentations written in Lao and English;Participating in regular project team meetings and recording the meeting minutes;Assisting in field data collection including preparing interview questions and conducting interviews, ; andAssisting in data analysis including coding data, creating themes, and summarizing resultsAssisting in drafting research progress reports. 2. Assist in providing logistical support to the organization and follow-up of the Youth Forum events, including: Translating Youth Forum materials such as presentation slides and handouts;Sending and tracking invitations and other Youth Forum materials to local speakers and participants;Assisting travel arrangement, procurement and related payment;Providing technical support in organizing and conducting online events; andTaking minutes and maintaining event records. 3. Facilitate communication among partners and networks in Lao PDR for the Project: Assisting in communicating with partner organizations such as Tokyo Institute of Technology and UNESCO Bangkok, and local key stakeholders as necessary;Responding to inquiries from participants, partners and facilitators from Lao PDR;Keeping contact lists of the network members updated; andSupporting communication activities via social media and network portals. 4. Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal Investigator. RequirementsBachelor’s degree in social science, education, culture, sustainable development or other related disciplines is required.Master’s degree or equivalent in education, international development, social sciences, or a related discipline or other relevant social sciences is desirable.Demonstrated experience in conducting qualitative research, particularly carrying out interviews and recording fieldnote observationsExperienced in analyzing and summarizing qualitative data, particularly data organization and data codingEfficient handling of multiple project tasks at once and responding to urgent requestsExperience in providing logistical support on-site including liaising with relevantExcellent time management skills including successful implementation of project activities based on schedule and effective utilization of time management tools and software where necessary.Work experience in international organizations or promoting major international initiatives; andKnowledge in cultural heritage is desirable.Full professional proficiency both oral and written in Lao and English is required.Knowledge of another UN official working language is an asset. Trip prerequisites will be met at the expense of the consultant. Travel cost will be calculated based on economy class travel, regardless of the length of travel.
