About HHI
The Harvard Humanitarian Initiative (HHI) is a university-wide academic and research center in humanitarian crisis and leadership. HHI is an affiliated program with the International Division of the Brigham Health Emergency Department and based at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (HSPH) Department of Global Health and Population. As an Inter-Faculty Initiative, HHI collaborates closely with all Harvard Schools and Harvard Teaching Hospitals and is the primary humanitarian outreach arm of Harvard University. The mission of the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative is to create new knowledge and advance evidence-based leadership in disasters and humanitarian crisis. HHI was founded in 2005, currently operates 20 projects, and consists of 60 staff, faculty, visiting scientists, students, and collaborators. HHI’s aim is to promote interdisciplinary dialogue in pressing humanitarian issues, advance the science and practice of humanitarian response worldwide, and improve the lives of communities in war, conflict, and natural disasters.

About the Peace and Human Rights Data Program
This is an exciting opportunity to work with a range of public health and peacebuilding researchers led by the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), Harvard Medical School (HMS), and the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative (HHI). The Peace and Human Rights Data program at BWH/HHI utilizes rigorous research methods to assess needs, perceptions, and behaviors among those affected by conflict and other forms of violence, with a focus on public health, justice, peacebuilding, and social cohesion. The project is supported and funded by several United Nations agencies, foundations, and international organizations.

About the position
The Program Manager serves as the primary resource for research, programmatic, administrative, and financial management of the Peace and Human Rights Data portfolio. In this role, the successful candidate will lead and manage day-to-day programmatic operations, provide support to program staff, support human resources management, track any needed supply and service procurement, provide oversight of grant and non-grant financial accounts, and monitor and report on project implementation. Candidates should be willing and able to travel internationally if programmatically necessary, following institutional travel policies, and dependent on COVID-19 restrictions. The candidate will be part of the HHI operations team and work closely with finance, human resources, grants administration, and other departments at HSPH and BWH. The candidate will have excellent communication skills to interact with a range of external and internal partners, faculty, staff, interns, fellows, as well as all stakeholders. The Program Manager will directly report to the Principal Investigators (PI).

*This position is grant-funded through Brigham and Women’s Hospital and is for a 12-month initial appointment, with the possibility of extension.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Develop and execute a project management plan to track performance of deliverables against project timelines, grant deliverables, goals, budgets and objectives.
  2. Oversee compliance with all funding agencies and the IRB by ensuring that required information is maintained and reported on a regular basis.
  3. Work closely with Research Management, Finance, and other departments at HSPH and BWH to steward project proposals and manage post-award activities.
  4. Ensure project quality and performance.
  5. Monitor expenses against and balance of various project fund accounts.
  6. Substantively contribute to report-writing and other communication materials.
  7. Share program news for dissemination on HHI digital platforms.
  8. Request and track new vendor set-up for purchases and onboarding of independent contractors.
  9. Submit invoices for payment and receipts for reimbursement through distinct project accounts.
  10. Support procurement and shipping of project equipment and ensure adherence to federal procurement standards.
  11. Assist in travel planning of project team members.
  12. Organize team meetings (invites, scheduling, agendas, notes, etc.)
  13. Other duties as assigned by the PI.

Location: HHI Office Cambridge, MA, USA. Any relocation costs are to be borne by the selected candidate. Remote or hybrid working will align with Brigham and Women’s and/or Harvard University guidance during the pandemic. The primary work location for this position is the HHI office on 14 Story Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Until our return to campus, which is still to-be-determined but anticipated to begin this fall, this interview process and position will be conducted virtually – including virtual interviews, remote onboarding, and remote work. The remote nature of this position is only temporary. Local, on-campus work will be required once the organization and this position return to an operational status that supports it.

Monthly remuneration will depend upon qualifications and experience.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field including public health, international relations, or humanitarian studies; other areas will be considered.
  • 3+ years of related professional experience in research program/project management.
  • Experience with MS Word, Excel, Outlook, management software such as Peoplesoft and communication technology tools such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, etc.

Desirable:

  • Experience managing global projects in low- and middle-income countries, specifically with experience working in Africa, Asia, or Latin America.
  • Prior experience with federal and non-federal sponsors/donors, and an understanding of federal research administration policies is preferred.
  • Master’s degree preferred (international relations, public health, health care administration, business, education administration, science; other areas will be considered)
  • Familiarity with humanitarian aid, global health, or international development.
  • Fluent or highly proficient in spoken and written English. French is also desirable.

  1. Ability to manage complex project management plans with competing priorities.
  2. High degree of analytic ability to manage the financial aspects of the position. Familiarity and experience coordinating with financial and procurement departments such as supply chain management, accounts payable, and grants management.
  3. Excellent written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.
  4. Very strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated confidence and exceptional ability to communicate and collaborate with multicultural stakeholders across time zones and geographic locations.
  5. Highly organized with outstanding planning skills, flexible but able to meet deadlines.
  6. Strong analytical, organizational, and time management skills.
  7. Ability to manage team members, work harmoniously as a member of a team, adapt to diverse backgrounds and maintain a high standard of personal conduct. High degree of initiative, self-motivation, and ability to also work independently is required.
  8. Knowledge of and commitment to concepts and issues tied to social justice, gender sensitivity, diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as professional ethics.
