In Mozambique, the Health Portfolio has been expanding since February 2019, being currently a multi-donor funded Portfolio. Under the Health Portfolio, UNDP’s intervention is supporting the Government of Mozambique, through the Ministry of Health, in implementing the National Strategies towards achieving:

the mission of the National Strategic Plan for Pharmaceutical Logistics and its future integration with the Extended Vaccination Programme (PAV). The Project works to support the MoH in implementing National Logistics Pharmaceutical Plan (PELF) for establishing Medical Warehouses fully equipped including with Incinerators in strategic geographical areas that will ensure medical and non-medical products stocks available in quantity and quality necessary to be distributed through optimized and safer routes to reach the last mile and be accessible to all citizens at all times. the mission of National Emergency Plan for preparedness and response to the COVID-19 pandemic, through strengthening laboratory capacity for decentralized testing, ensuring adequate and equipped health infrastructure, including through rehabilitation and installation of prefabricated modules. This intervention increases the diagnostic efficiency at sub-national level, aiming at providing citizens with their right to access quality services of treatment and care in a timely manner. Support is also being expanded to INS for the establishment of the Regional Centers, enhancing country capability for research and data management towards developing evidence-based preparedness plans for epidemics and pandemic COVID-19 that can inform efficient response plans.

Through Health projects, UNDP Mozambique is also establishing hospitalization centers for COVID-19 patients; and entering in Cabo Delgado to support the re-establishment of basic social services through community health centers.

UNDP is as well expanding to tailored community intervention, namely in Cabo Delgado towards strengthening community health system to increase access to quality services of prevention, treatment and care in remote areas affected by natural and man-made disasters.

This systemic approach is facilitating the current decentralization process of the health system promoted by the government which aims for better and timely delivery of medicines, treatments and healthcare to people at local level. A key strategy of the Project is implementation at decentralized levels to reach vulnerable populations and to decrease geographical inequalities – thereby contributing to the strategic objectives the National Strategic Health Plan (PESS).
