This post is located in the Office for Disarmament Affairs (ODA), in its Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific (RCPD), in Kathmandu, Nepal. The post reports to the Director of the Centre under the coordination of the Deputy Director. Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

• Serve as focal point for Conventional Arms pillar of UNRCPD’s Programme of Work.
• Gathers, selects and analyses information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including the press.
• Maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political issues, in general, and in particular as they affect the countries and thematic mandates for which the staff member is responsible.
• Keeps abreast of latest trends and developments in the area of assignment and provides inputs on issues to senior officials and colleagues in missions and elsewhere in the Secretariat.
• Monitors national and regional level political developments and provides advice to field mission/UN agencies active on the ground.
• Provides technical and substantive back up in the implementation of mandates of the office, branch or unit.
• Maintains contacts with other sectors of the UN, other international organizations and governments on coordination and policy matters.
• Implement the RCPD Project on supporting the UN Programme of Action to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects (UN PoA) in Asia and the Pacific as the main coordinator of the project.

An advanced university degree (Master’s or Doctorate degree, or equivalent) in in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or related fields is required. A first-level degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in the specified fields of studies with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, disarmament, security or related area is required.

Experience in the field of disarmament and control of conventional weapons is desirable.

Experience working in Asia-Pacific is desirable.

Experience working in or in support of a field operation of the United Nations Common System or a comparable international organization is desirable. Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English, both written and oral, is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage. Assessment

• This is a project post. Appointment or assignment against this position is for an initial period of 364 days. The appointment or assignment and renewal thereof are subject to the availability of the post or funds, budgetary approval or extension of the mandate.
