Duties

The operating room nurse is a member of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) obstetrical team, which responds to gynaecological and obstetrical emergencies, primarily in the operating room and other support services (such as sterilization and hygiene).

He/she will work closely with the other team members: the obstetrician-gynaecologist, the anaesthetist and the mobile midwife.

He/she will supervise and train ICRC and/or national resident nurses assigned to work alongside him/her in the operating room (mostly sterilization).

General Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Nana Gribizi District Hospital (NGDH) project leader and in collaboration with the obstetrician-gynaecologist and the anaesthetist, the operating room nurse will be an active member of the operating room hospital health team. The incumbents’ ultimate goal will be to implement medium to long term solutions aiming to build the national and/or ICRC resident team’s capacities to address obstetric emergencies at NGDH.

He/she will manage the nursing side of obstetric emergencies in the operating room according to ICRC standards, protocols and guidelines, in collaboration with other team members.

He/she will provide training and transfer his/her obstetrical emergencies management nursing skills to nurses assigned by the Ministry and/or ICRC resident nurses (depending on the situation) working in the operating and sterilization rooms.

He/she will ensure that patients receive proper pre and post-operative nursing care, in collaboration with the obstetrical team, primarily in the emergency and the operating roomr.

He/she will contribute to the development of an efficient and effective sterilization system in collaboration with residents and hospital health staff.

Main Tasks

Technical Support and Training

  • Implement pre- and intra-operative nursing procedures, according to international and ICRC protocols.
  • Evaluate the nursing care in the operating room, identify priority issues and propose improvements to the mobile and resident obstetrical team and hospital health staff.
  • Contribute to daily activities and operating program planning with the obstetrical team.
  • Ensure the proper use of the operating room register and forward statistics to the project leader.
  • Establish good collaboration with the national and resident operating room staff, including sterilization, emergencies and other NGDH departments.
  • Put in place an ongoing training plan (continued training, follow-up and reinforcement during successive missions) for resident and/or national NGDH nurses so they can offer nursing care during obstetrical emergencies (pre- and intra-operative) and manage and follow-up on hygiene and sterilization activities during the mission.
  • Make sure that each patient leaves the operating room with a completed chart containing clear post-operative instructions.
  • Liaise between the operating room, the recovery room and the hospital administration to ensure transmission of care (circuit to be set up).
  • Establish and oversee efficient sterilization processes, in accordance with ICRC procedures.
  • Ensure that hygiene precautions and aseptic techniques are in place and adhered to in the operating and sterilizing rooms.
  • Be available during emergencies, as required, to support the hospital team (24/7).
  • Collaborate with the project leader and the project’s other mobile physicians and nurses to implement a contingency plan for NGDH.
  • Facilitate the collection of information related to anaesthetic, gynaecological and obstetrical activity in collaboration with the NGDH’s obstetrician-gynaecologist and mobile midwife.
  • Contribute to the documentation of maternal death cases to prepare the mortality/morbidity review, in collaboration with the obstetrician-gynaecologist, the anaesthetist, the midwife and the project leader.

Administration/Management

  • Participate in project and sub-delegation meetings and other meetings related to the needs of the project and the services he/she provides.
  • Contribute to medical and other reports (WOR-BOR-QHTR-MAD).
  • Participate in patient data collection, analyse situations and events, and perpare treatment plans, exit records and death certificates.
  • Complete inventories and order materials and medications for the operating room (pre- and intra-operative) he/she oversees.
  • Supervise the proper use of the equipment and medications specific to his/her practice.
  • Assess human resources, materials and medications needed in the operating room in collaboration with the mobile midwife, the anaesthetist and the obstetrician-gynaecologist recommended to the project leader.

Location of Workplace

The operating room nurse is based in Kaga Bandoro.

Other Information

He/she will be part of NGDH health team and work closely with various team members while interacting/collaborating with other health program colleagues as required.
