International Medical Corps is a global, humanitarian, nonprofit organization dedicated to saving lives and relieving suffering through health care training and relief and development programs.

Established in 1984 by volunteer doctors and nurses, International Medical Corps is a private, voluntary, nonpolitical, nonsectarian organization. Over the past 29 years, International Medical Corps (IMC) has made significant contributions to saving lives, alleviating human suffering, and reducing the economic and social impact of disasters in Somalia through targeted assistance for Health, Nutrition, Protection and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) with support from several donors including USAID's Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA), European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), Department for International Development (DFID), United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. IMC currently operates in 4 regions of Somalia (Banadir, Middle Shabelle, Bay &Mudug South) operating both secondary and primary health care services including Hospitals, Health Centers, Primary HealthUnits, Mobile Health & Nutrition Teams and community aspects. IMC is in the process of establishing kidney dialysis centers in Mogadishu and Hargeisa and thus Biomedical Engineer is vital for smooth functioning of the center.

INTRODUCTION

This position will be available contingent upon award of grant to International Medical Corps

Job Purpose:

He/she will be responsible for treatments of disorders of the kidney, both chronic and acute, disorders of high blood pressure, diabetes, etc. fluid, electrolyte and mineral balance, and manages complications of kidney failure necessitating dialysis (removal of fluid and body wastes) when the kidneys do not function. He/she will work in consultations with other doctors and specialist e.g. Surgeons about vascular and peritoneal cavity access for dialysis if needed. He/she is to train other health careworkers at the facility and ensure overall functioning of the facility and patients quality care.

Main Responsibilities:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function with or without reasonablesupport. The tasks listed are representative of the nature and level of work assigned and are not necessarily all-inclusive.

□ Provide leadership to the dialysis unit team and ensure proper day to day functioning of the centre.

□ Ensure weekly and monthly staff rosters at the unit

□ Visit the dialysis center on daily basis to attend to patients and do ward round and when needed be on call.

□ Diagnose, treat and manage any condition or disease which affects the kidney functions including management of a wide range of systemic disorders, which may be responsible for malfunctioning of the kidneys.

□ Lead on and ensure quality care to patients admitted or outpatients to the dialysis center for treatment and management of the conditions.

□ Work in collaboration with other doctors and specialist at the facility.

□ Assess the patients; decide about specific dialysis prescriptions: evaluate the co morbid illnesses and advice regardingsupporting medicines; take note of the initial / inter / post dialysis events, and consider specific recommendations.

□ Review the water quality, infection control measures and day to day functioning at regular intervals.

□ Judge the practices of the dialysis doctors at the facility, technicians and nurses from time to time.

□ Provide 24-hour consultation and backup care to all the patients.

□ Monthly review of all in center dialysis patients.

□ Enforcement of rules and regulations relative to the level of patient care and safety.

□ Maintenance of an ongoing liaison between the hospital authority, statutory bodies, dialysis staff and the patients.

□ Protecting the rights of the patients vis-à-vis the staff.

□ Train & supervise the in house training program for national staff and ensure continuous medical education.

□ Organize referral of cases when needed.

□ Ensure documentation and reporting of activities and services at the facility.

□ Ensure and participate in regular staff meeting at the facility.

□ Contribute to quantification and assessments of supplies needs at the facility, more so on medical commodities.

□ In collaboration with the facility supervisor ensure equitable use of resources at the facility and ensure rationalprescriptions.

□ Work on any other tasks that may be assigned by the supervisor.

Accountability to the Affected Population (AAP)/ Community Based Feedback & Response Mechanism (CBFRM).

□ Depending on your position & role, disseminate messages to the members of the community in your area of jurisdiction of their right to expect high quality services from IMC.

□ Disseminate AAP/CBFRM Mechanism currently available for community, enquire their preferred ways if any and guide/support them in keeping constant communication with IMC.

□ Participate in forums to engage community members to identify their own needs that IMC should work towardsfulfilling.

□ Collect community complaints and feedback, report them to your supervisor and follow up the response to relay it back to the complainant until closure.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

IMC is a humanitarian organization involved in emergency programmes. All IMC staff are to be flexible and willing to assist in IMC operations as and when required.

Academic Qualifications:

□ M.B.B.S. or MD degree, with post-graduate degree or diploma in Nephrology from accredited University or institution.

□ Registered by Association or board or equivalent body of medical doctors of respective country and with a valid registration and license.

□ Minimum 2 years working experience as Nephrologist in Kidney dialysis centre.

□ Experience in central line access.

□ Experience in critical care management.

□ Certified in advanced cardiac life support (ACLS).

□ Experience in paediatric nephrology – desirable.

□ Good organizational, problem solving and interpersonal skills.

□ Commitment to Humanitarian Principles.

□ Computer literate.

□ Language, Fluent in English and Somalia language is an added advantage.

□ Flexible and accountable.

□ Diplomatic, maintains confidentiality and respects of medical ethics.

□ Ability to work in a multicultural environment.
