The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Center is looking for a competent, self-motivated, and dynamic candidate to join IWMI's office in Laos as National Researcher - Social Scientist.

Social Scientist will lead research on gender and inclusion, conduct a performance analysis of agroecology innovations and scenario based analysis and case study assessments under the Resilient Aquatic Foods Initiative (RAFqS) in Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar. The successful candidate will be based in Laos and conversant with benefits assessments, total economic valuation or similar social and economic analysis.

Requirements

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Lead research on benefits valuation of integrated and agroecological food production systems in order to understand what benefits accrue and to whom, how they are distributed and comparatively whether they present viable alternatives to business as usual in certain geographies and under certain conditions; Conduct scenario based economic analysis for upscaling integrated rice and fish production systems; Lead valuation aspects of RAFS case study research; Conduct secondary data collation, literature synthesis, interviews, and other research activities; Ensure gender and inclusion are central to our research as well as the effective participation of a wide range of stakeholders; Develop business cases to tailor and target investment in integrated and or agroecological production systems; Document research outputs \u2013 Compile and analyze data and contribute to scientific publications, policy briefs, research papers, case studies, reports, briefs, presentations and other forms of science outputs and more general materials for dissemination to wider policy and public audiences; and Carry out other project and research related activities as required.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Excellent socio-economic research data collection skills and demonstrated ability to perform in-depth analysis of quantitative and qualitative data and report the results; Lao language and in country experience ideally in rural areas and with ethnic minorities an advantage; Experience in presenting research results to wider audiences essential and contributing to scientific publications a distinct advantage; Experience conducting desk and field based research utilizing total economic valuation type approaches; Confidence speaking in English and strong written English skills; Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams and build strong working relationships with a range of key stakeholders, especially in government agencies, national universities, international agencies, media, and civil society organizations; Advanced knowledge of all main MS Office applications; Capacity to manage a workload comprising multiple tasks and to deliver high quality outputs on time, whilst ensuring attention to detail; and Ability to be bring a creative and proactive approach to tasks, to work to own initiative and to require minimal supervision.


MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

PhD or Master\u2019s degree or combined educational and professional experience in economics, social science, development studies, human geography, sociology, development economics, or closely related field relevant to water resources management, agricultural development and natural resource governance. Minimum five (5) years of related work experience.

This is a nationally recruited position and only candidates who are eligible to work in Lao PDR will be considered. The duration of the contract will initially be for a period of two-years with the possibility of extension.
