POSITION: Peace Corps Medical Officer

WORK HOURS: Monday - Thursday 7h30-17h30, Fridays 7h30-11h30, and as needed

SALARY RANGE: USD $35,000-$40,000 per year

The United States Peace Corps seeks a Medical Doctor or Nurse Practitioner to serve as a contracted Peace Corps Medical Officer (PCMO) based in Moroni, Comoros. The PCMO will provide health care to U.S. Peace Corps Volunteers in Comoros and will work under the supervision of the Peace Corps Country Director in Moroni and the Peace Corps Office of Medical Services in Washington DC.

Duties include:

• Routine primary health care to Peace Corps Trainees and Volunteers including treatment of common illnesses and injuries in accordance with Peace Corps medical guidelines

• Individual short-term counseling on disease prevention, adjustment issues, stress management and cross-cultural problems

• Response to emergency medical situations

• Ability to conduct trainings on health related issues

• Site visits to Peace Corps Volunteers throughout Comoros

• Administrative tasks of the medical office including budget management and inventory of medical supplies and equipment

• Alternate 24 hour on- call duty with the other PCMO

Qualifications and Requirements:

The following information is required of all PCMO applicants. All documents must be in English or accompanied by English translations.

· Resume or CV

· Three reference forms completed by applicant’s references addressing applicant’s clinical skills. Alternatively, the reference may submit a written letter addressing the applicant’s clinical skills. All references must have worked with the candidate and be written within the past two years, include full name and credential, current professional capacity, institution name and location, position/relation to candidate, dates working with candidate.

· PCMO applicant skills survey.

· Privilege form. The applicant must complete this request for privileges depending on their professional qualifications.

· Copy of medical practice license. Please also provide a copy of the medical license translated into English. Official translation is not necessary. If the country does not require a medical license to practice, the applicant must submit written confirmation issued directly from the professional medical board, Ministry of Health or other appropriate regulatory authority, establishing that the candidate is properly credentialed for medical practice. If the medical license does not have an expiration date, written confirmation must be submitted directly from the issuing authority. Copy of certification is for Nurse Practitioner.

· Copy of academic diploma in English.

· Graduate of accredited school. MDs must be a graduate of a school listed in this link: https://search.wdoms.org/.

· Current license to practice.

· At least 5 years relevant clinical experience in primary care after medical school. Proficiency in the assessment and management of acute and on-going illnesses.

· Ability to communicate effectively in oral /written English and French.

· Experience in managing mental health issues including basic counseling of patients.

· Experience in training design and presentation of health related material.

· Experience managing a health unit.

· Experience with Peace Corps or other international organizations.

· Must be able to obtain an American visa and security clearance.

Other relevant requirements:

• Knowledge of at least one national language of Comoros an advantage.

• Ability to work effectively as part of an intercultural team.

• Willing to travel to sites in Comoros.

• Ability to work with minimal supervision.

• Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
