ITC's Social Investments Program, Mission Sunehra Kal, aims to address vulnerabilities of farming communities, particularly with respect to water resources. The focus of the mission is on assisting communities to collectively conserve and manage local natural resources, broad-base farming systems and expand off-farm income portfolios to promote growth of rural economies through community participation and partnerships. ITC's integrated watershed development projects already cover more than 300,000 ha across 14 Indian states. The long-term objective of these investments is to drought-proof all its core agri-catchments and achieve positive water balance in all its factory locations, through a combination of supply augmentation and demand management. Towards these objectives, ITC has been working in supply side augmentation and demand side management of water.

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and ITC have forged a knowledge partnership through which IWMI is helping ITC develop a drought-proofing and water security framework. As part of project activities in phase I, the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) led the development of frameworks for ‘drought proofing’ and ‘water security for all’ and piloted the same in 4 agri-watersheds and 4 factory locations.

Next phase of project will support ITC and partners’ drought proofing and water security activities at watershed level and beyond to sub-basin scale through use of scientific and evidence-based tools for planning. The project will take forward and strengthen the outcomes and activities of phase 1, categorically focusing on Improving and expanding the capabilities of developed tools and framework, training ITC directly and through them their NGOs (across India) on both drought proofing & unit water security and provide handholding support to adopt the frameworks across all operational catchments decided by ITC.

Review existing drought proofing and water security plans and interventions in selected agricultural and factory watersheds with a view to identifying gaps in planning and execution. Develop formats for collecting and synthesizing primary and secondary data (groundwater, surface-water, agriculture water use) for strengthening monitoring and assess the impact of project activities. Engage with key stakeholders in project implementation, policy advocacy and dissemination of project outcomes to contribute to development goals. Integrate research findings into effective policy recommendations and disseminate information through relevant guidelines and policy briefs
