Background information/Organizational Context:

Iran is one of the largest refugee hosting countries in the world and is one of the principal host countries for Afghan refugees – one of most protracted refugee situations under UNHCR’s mandate. UNHCR is the largest UN agency in Iran and the only one with field presence, operating in 5 main offices in Tehran, Esfahan, Mashhad, Kerman and Shiraz.

Working in the Executive Office, the intern will mainly assist the External Engagement Unit in its support of the Representative and Deputy Representative, as and where required, The intern will be able to acquire fundamental skills in Donor Relations and External Relations, as well as become familiar with other functions and processes in UNHCR, especially Programme and Protection.

The intern shall undertake and perform, to the best of his/her abilities, the tasks of the internship and shall maintain confidentiality of all unpublished information made known to them during the course of the internship, including as stated within the Internship Agreement. Interns cannot represent UNHCR in any official capacity.

Duties and responsibilities

· Support the Representative and/or Deputy Representative, such as by drafting meeting minutes, summarising relevant material for events and meetings;

· Contribute to analysing operational trends and funding priorities;

· Support the preparation of factsheets and other reporting/information materials useful for external meetings, events and briefings, as well as for contributing to analyses of trends and funding priorities;

· Assist with the organisation of events and missions;

· Assist with visibility efforts.

Minimum qualifications required

· Recent or ongoing academic engagement in a field relevant to the mandate of UNHCR, e.g. international law, international relations, development studies;**

· Very good oral and written skills in English, and working knowledge of another UN language;

· Previous experience of working in an international setting (experience working with UN/NGO environment preferred);

· Proven capabilities and track record in terms of flexibility, initiative-taking and organizational skills;

· Proven capabilities and skills in terms of teamwork and diplomatic/culturally sensitive ways of working.**

Eligibility

In order to be considered eligible for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:

· Be a recent graduate or current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO (Recent graduates are to be considered those persons who completed their studies within one year of applying for an internship with UNHCR. Current students are to be considered those who have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of the Organization, preferably in social sciences, humanities or other related fields);

· An individual whose father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister is a staff member of UNHCR, including a Temporary Appointment holder or a member of the Affiliate Workforce, is not eligible for an internship.

Allowance

Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance to partially help to cover the cost of food and local transportation.
