Turkey continues to host the largest refugee population in the world, providing protection to over three million refugees and asylum-seekers. With 3,6 million Syrians granted temporary protection by the Turkish Government, Syrians constitute the largest refugee group. In addition, Turkey hosts over 260,000 non-Syrians persons of concern to UNHCR.

The Government of Turkey undertakes the leadership in the protection of and assistance to all persons of concern in Turkey. UNHCR¿s overall strategy is to support Turkey in developing and implementing its national refugee response strategy, as well as coordinate the response of various humanitarian actors. As the main partner of the Turkish State in the field of international protection, UNHCR Turkey continues to provide legislative and technical support as well as institutional capacity building support to the Directorate General of Migration Management (DGMM) and other national institutions.

UNHCR Turkey co-leads the Regional Refugee and Resilience Plan (3RP) with UNDP. In this context, UNHCR is coordinating the Refugee Response and UNDP is coordinating the Resilience Response. The 3RP coordination in Southeast Turkey has developed with operational field based intersectoral, sectoral and geographic mechanisms and increasingly promoting the transition to strengthened engagement with province and municipality level coordination.

Under the guidance of the Assistant Inter-Agency Coordination Officer and peer supervision of the Senior Inter-agency Coordination Assistant, the Inter-Agency Intern will work in the Interagency
Coordination Unit (IACU) in Gaziantep. Direct reporting line will be to the Assistant Inter-Agency Coordination Officer.

Objectives of the internship
- Enhance the educational experience of graduate students through practical and guided handson exposure and involvement in UNHCR¿s inter-agency work in Turkey;
- Provide graduate students with an exposure to the working environment of a multilateral organization and a better understanding of UNHCR Turkey¿s goals and activities.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Support the effective functioning of the Inter-Agency unit, including developing and updating sector contacts lists, contribute to internal and external correspondence, updating the intersector
calendar, note-taking in key meetings, administrative preparation of meetings and following up on various thematic issues
- Transcription and translation of text, documentation, meeting minutes and presentations from Turkish to English
- Work with 3RP UNHCR coordinators and Information Management focal points on substantive and administrative tasks related to their sectors
- Contribute to research in thematic priority areas as defined by Inter-Agency coordinators
- Compile best practices, lessons learnt, experiences and stories on key thematic areas
- Support the planning and follow-up of various missions and donor briefings
- Contribute to ad hoc requests, as needed

Minimum qualifications required
- University student/graduate
- Fluency in Turkish and English (written and spoken)
- Affinity with the work of the United Nations, and the national context on the protection of refugees in Turkey (preferred)
- Demonstrated skills and ability to work in Microsoft Office software, different presentation and file sharing applications

Other Relevant Information
- Interns cannot apply for any UN vacancies during the period of internship.
- The intern must keep confidential any and all unpublished information made known during the course of the internship and not publish any reports or paper on the basis of information
obtained except with the written approval and authorization of UNHCR.
- Interns will not be able to undertake official travel to other UNHCR field offices in Turkey

To whom it may concern,
UNHCR Turkey Operation seeks university students and recent graduates interested in applying for the UNHCR internship program starting from 2022. The details of the program can be found below;

Purpose of the Internship

The purpose of the internship program is twofold:
1. Primarily, provide interns with an opportunity to gain practical work experience related to their academic program or future work in a field related to UNHCR¿s mission (e.g., international relations, international law, human rights, administration, public information, fieldwork, etc.)
2. Secondly, to provide UNHCR offices with the assistance of qualified interns specialized in various professional fields.

Eligibility
1- In order to be considered eligible for an internship, the following criteria must be fulfilled:
a. Being a recent graduate (those who have completed their studies within one year of applying for an internship with UNHCR) or a current student in a graduate/undergraduate school program from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO; and
b. Having completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of the Organization.

2- An individual whose father, mother, son, daughter, brother, or sister is a current staff member of UNHCR, including a Temporary Appointment holder or a member of the Affiliate Workforce, is not eligible for an internship.

Status

Interns are neither ¿staff members¿ under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations nor ¿officials¿ within the meaning of the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations of 13 February 1946.

Duration

Internships are initially granted for a minimum period of two months, up to a maximum of six months. Upon the agreement of the intern and the supervisor, an internship may be extended up to a maximum total cumulative internship duration of eight months, provided that the eligibility criteria continue to be met. An intern may undertake multiple internship assignments as long as the total cumulative internship duration is not exceeded. The internship program is expected on a full-time basis. Exceptions may be
granted if it is in the mutual interest of both the intern and the Organization and upon agreement of both parties.

General Conditions

Interns are fully responsible for arranging medical insurance covering the full internship period. UNHCR accepts no responsibility for any costs connected to the medical insurance of interns. The work unit will provide interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party (sponsored interns) a Food and Local Transportation Allowance (the Allowance), which will be the equivalent of 10% of the Daily Subsistence Allowance (DSA) of the duty station and be based on 30 calendar days. Costs and arrangements for international travel, including travel arrangements to and from the location where the internship will be carried out, visas, accommodation, and living expenses, are the responsibilities of interns or their sponsoring institutions. An internship does not create any expectation or entitlement to employment with UNHCR at the conclusion of the internship. Following the successful completion of an internship with UNHCR, and in order to be considered as an external candidate to a regular position or a Temporary Appointment (TA), six months must elapse between the end of the UNHCR internship and the closing date of the related vacancy announcement. A former intern may be engaged under any affiliate scheme with no break-in service.
