The expected duration of this individual contractor opportunity is 8 work weeks (depending on exact level of experience of the selected candidate) over a contractual period of 6 months from February to August.

Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

Established in April 2012, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has a membership of over 130 Governments (see www.ipbes.net) and seeks to respond to the needs of governments and other stakeholders to strengthen the science-policy interface on biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Under the guidance of the IPBES Head of Work Programme, the Individual Contractor will provide technical and operational support to the scoping process for the methodological assessment of the impact and dependence of business on biodiversity and nature's contributions to people, mandated under the IPBES 2030 Rolling Work Programme (see here for decision IPBES-7/1 on the IPBES 2030 Rolling Work Programme):

  • Provide technical and operational support to:

o The selection process for scoping experts, in particular:  Review of the expertise of nominees;

 Support the review of nominees by the IPBES Multidisciplinary Expert Panel.

o The organization of an online conference to seek early input into the scoping process, including:  The preparation of a concise report on the online conference, capturing the inputs by all participants during the meeting (oral, written) as well as the entries in the associated forum;

o The organization of the meeting of scoping experts, in particular regarding:  The preparation of the agenda and background documentation for the meeting;

 The organization of individual sessions;

 Capturing the discussions in concise notes;

o Coordination of the preparation of the scoping report, in particular regarding:  Coordination of inputs from scoping experts;

 Editing and reference management;

 Revisions based on internal review comments;

o To any Governmental meeting or stakeholder meeting regarding the scoping report in preparation for IPBES 9.

Qualifications/special skills

Academic Qualifications: An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in Environment Science or a related field is required.

Experience:

  • At least 5 years of experience in working in the area of business and biodiversity;
  • At least 5 years of experience in academic writing.

Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

Fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of French and/ or Spanish would be an asset.
