Position Title: HR Intern

Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

Context:

Under the overall supervision of the Resource Management Officer, and under the direct supervision of the Sr HR Assistant, the intern will assist with the Human Resources activities of the Mission.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  • Receive instruction how to send out HR announcements and reminders to all IOM Personnel under the Country Office.
  • Learn by practical experience how to prepare vacancy announcements (interns, hourly, and staff vacancies).
  • Develop skills in handling of pertinent HR documents from onboarding to offboarding.
  • Learn by practical experience the correct procedures for the completion of the staff and non-staff members’ personnel files.
  • Receive instruction and assist in the follow-up submission of Mandatory Training requirements.
  • Learn by practical experience the skills of E-Filing of Personnel Action (PA) and other documents in the staff members, intern, or consultant’s personnel file.
  • Assist with the renaming of saved documents in the HR common drive by using the internal HR format.
  • Learn how to coordinate and issue staff IDs.
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned.

Training Components and Learning Elements

  • Gain experience in working in an international multicultural environment, within the United Nations system.
  • Gain experience on Human Resources practices in line with IOM and UN standards.
  • Acquire experience and technical knowledge of Human Resources profession.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Education

  • Enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Psychology or a related field with not more than two years of relevant professional experience from an accredited academic institution.

Experience

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, E-mail, Outlook; previous experience in SAP is a distinct advantage.
  • Excellent organization and analytical skills, attention to details, and ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Prior exposure with international humanitarian organizations, non-government or government institutions/organization in a multi-cultural setting is an advantage.

Languages

For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written).

Eligibility and Selection

In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:

a) Have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities;

b) Are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations and/or for whom internship is required to complete their studies; or

c) Are sponsored by governmental/non-governmental institutions and/or academia to work in specific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor;

d) are either students approaching the end of their studies and preparing a thesis, or recently graduated, who have less than two years of relevant working experience;

e) are between 20 and 36 years of age.

f) Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, and additional enquiries will only be addressed if the candidate is shortlisted.

g) Depending on experience and location, IOM provides a small monthly stipend to help offset costs.

Appointment will be subject to certification that the candidate is medically fit for appointment, accreditation, any residency or visa requirements, and security clearances.

The position involves onsite and/or offsite work (or a combination of both). The working modality will be further discussed during the interviews if candidate is available to work on-site and/or offsite.
