Duties

The obstetrician-gynaecologist is a member of the hospitals’ gynaecological-obstetrical department, which responds to gynaecological and obstetrical emergencies.

The obstetrician-gynaecologist, in collaboration with the mobile midwife, organizes gynaecological and obstetrical care in the department and in emergency and operating rooms, according to national and international standards and/or International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) protocols.

He/she is responsible to supervise and train the department’s physicians, nurses and midwives, as well as the resident ICRC staff (in collaboration with the mobile midwife).

General Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Nana Gribizi District Hospital (NGDH) project leader, he/she will coordinate the gynaecological-obstetric activities with the hospital’s health team. The incumbents’ ultimate goal will be to implement medium to long term solutions aiming to build the national and/or ICRC resident team’s capacity to address obstetric emergencies at NGDH.

He/she will be responsible for all gynaecological and obstetric activities, including the immediate follow-up of post-operative patients, in collaboration with the hospital physician.

He/she will provide training and transfer skills relating to obstetric emergencies management to the Ministry physician and/or ICRC resident physician (depending on the situation).

He/she will provide ongoing training to midwives, in collaboration with the mobile midwife.

If necessary, he/she will help the mental health and psychosocial support delegate offer medical attention to victims of sexual violence through training and on-site care.

Main Tasks

Technical Support and Training

  • Participate in the improvement of obstetric and gynaecological services (maternity, prenatal consultations, etc.) and the operating room activities at NGDH in Kaga Bandoro;
  • Coach, oversee and develop the obstetric knowledge and practices of NGDH physicians, nurses and midwives (ICRC resident and/or local staff).
  • Implement an ongoing education plan in adaptative obstetric emergencies for NGDH physicians, nurses and midwives, including follow-ups in the departments he/she oversees (i.e. training in basic emergency obstetrical and neonatal care).
  • Supervise gynaecology and obstetrics training and provide direction as required, in collaboration with the hospital physician.
  • Provide post-operative follow-up to patients and newborns with the hospital physician, in collaboration with the mobile midwife, the pediatrician and the anaesthetist.
  • Offer training and/or professional development opportunities throughout the hospital to help staff care for victims of sexual violence, as required.
  • Offer professional development opportunities to health centre staff relating to referrals and risk identification in collaboration with the mobile midwife, as required.
  • Assist and supervise the maternity team responsible for the care of hospitalized patients, in collaboration with the mobile midwife. Provide initial treatment and resuscitation to patients and newborns in the maternity ward and collaborate with the resident and/or national mobile midwife, pediatrician and mobile anaesthetist.
  • Implement and monitor national and international medical protocols and/or ICRC protocols (antibiotics and medications) for patients (women and newborns);
  • Be available during emergencies, as required, to support the hospital team (24/7);
  • Collaborate with the project leader and the project’s other mobile physicians and nurses to implement a contingency plan for NGDH.
  • Facilitate the collection of information related to gynaecological and obstetrical activity in collaboration with the NGDH’s mobile midwife.
  • Contribute to the documentation of maternal death cases to prepare the mortality/morbidity review, in collaboration with the midwife, the anaesthetist and the project leader.

Administration/Management

  • Participate in project and sub-delegation meetings and other meetings related to the needs of the project and the services he/she provides.
  • Contribute to medical and other reports (WOR-BOR-QHTR-MAD)
  • Participate in patient data collection, analyse situations and events and prepare treatment plans, exit records and death certificates.
  • Complete inventories and order materials and medications for the department he/she oversees.
  • Supervise the proper use of the equipment and medications specific to his/her practice.
  • Assess human resources, materials and medications needs for the maternity ward and operating room in collaboration with the mobile midwife and the anaesthetist recommended to the project leader.

Location of Workplace

The obstetrician-gynaecologist will be based in Kaga Bandoro.

Other Information

  • He/she will be part of the NGDH health team and work closely with various team members while interacting/collaborating with other health program colleagues as required (Primary Health Care, Mental Health and Psychosocial Support).
  • He/she will report to the project leader.
