About the role

Are you passionate about tackling climate change and accelerating action to achieve SE4All? Are you motivated to design and deliver programmes that address the underlying barriers to faster progress in low and middle income countries?

Crown Agents is looking to appoint a senior and experienced leader to head up its Energy and Climate practice. You will lead a small but highly competent technical team to grow our portfolio of energy and climate related programmes around the world.

You will work with colleagues across our global business to deploy Crown Agents’ existing capabilities in supply chain, government systems strengthening and programme/fund management to the energy and climate challenges governments face. The programmes in your portfolio will make a critical difference in countries’ abilities to achieve their energy and climate related SDG & Paris goals.

Your primary task will be to build out from our existing energy and climate programmes and position Crown Agents as an established player and implementer of choice for:

  • Decentralised renewable energy (DRE) programmes, including building a consortium and raising funding to deliver a substantial, multi-country, solar for health programme
  • Climate finance and energy sector procurement capacity building
  • Energy and climate fund management.

The Energy and Climate practice team will also incorporate Crown Agents’ residual global trade capability as a subsidiary business development area.

About you

You will bring to this role a deep understanding of the development landscape around energy and climate change, and expert knowledge of the funding priorities and mechanisms of donors (bilateral, multilateral and foundations). A strong track record of winning and delivering impactful climate and energy programmes at scale, in Africa and/or Asia is essential. Excellent empathetic team leadership skills, and a proven capability to manage and grow a successful business stream are also critical requirements.

Qualification:

Degree (ideally postgraduate level) in a field relevant to Crown Agents work such as international development, an MBA, environmental economics or associated field.

Experience:

  • At least seven years’ experience in developing and managing successful energy or climate related initiatives in low and/or middle income countries and a track record of delivery of donor funded programmes
  • Proven ability to identify, build and win new energy/climate related business opportunities
  • A track record of successfully growing a business unit or area through securing new competitively tendered work is strongly preferable
  • Excellent organizational and programme management experience, including with staff work plans, budget management and monitoring and
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the capacity to effectively handle a variety of relationships in a multicultural environment and negotiate with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Experience in strategy development and working across sectors or disciplines is preferable
  • Experience in building partnerships/consortia for development funding as well as negotiation of programmatic contractual arrangements with
  • Strong people leadership and management skills, with good emotional intelligence
  • Ability to demonstrate drive, agility and ambition in progressively demanding leadership roles
