Job description
Still I Rise, an international NGO, works on the development and implementation of humanitarian projects aimed at the education and support of refugee children and teenagers, is looking for an Education Manager to join the team in Samos, Greece. This individual will be responsible for managing the educational development of the program on Samos. It involves supervising a team of teachers, and collaborating as part of a coordination team. The candidate for the Education Manager should ideally be someone with a strong passion for education and children’s development, a skilled leader, an assertive team player, and geared towards creative problem solving.
On Samos Still I Rise operates as an emergency school providing educational support to students between the ages of 12-17 years. Currently, due to COVID-19 restrictions we are providing distance learning through remote classes and homework distribution. We aim to return to in-house programming as soon as it's possible.
Responsibilities
Oversee the educational development of the program on Samos and report to the Program Manager and the Education Director
Manage and supervise a team of approximately four teachers, by observing classes, keeping track of performance and deliverables, providing feedback and assessments to teachers, and steer lesson planning
Develop and provide regular trainings to the team of teachers, and periodically to the coordination team
Develop and regularly update curricula for all classes in coordination with the Education Director
Monitoring curriculum progress and student attendance, and report patterns, concerns, successes and other findings
Lead at least one English class at a given grade level, which involves lesson planning and all other duties of teaching
Collaborate closely with the Child Safeguarding & Protection Officer to oversee student concern, implement behaviour plans, and streamline with extracurricular psychosocial activities
Run frequent needs assessments of our students and collaborate with the coordination team to respond
Communicate regularly with other educational actors on Samos, and provide contextual reports to Program Manager to update on developments in education for asylum seeking children
Essential skills
All applicants are required a fluent knowledge of the English language- written and oral-, minimum age of 23 years and availability to work and reside in Greece for a minimum of 6 months without any VISA requirements.
A degree in Education, or any other relevant field
Proven experience as a (lead) teacher in a diverse educational setting
Proven experience in team management
Excellent interpersonal skills - outstanding and effective written and verbal communication, assertive, socially aware and geared towards creative problem solving
Strong communication and leadership skills
Excellent organisational and time management skills- ability to handle multiple priorities and meet deadlines
High level of accountability over work- ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion
Commitment and willingness to work in a challenging environment
Passion, drive and dedication to our cause
Excellent IT skills including use of MS Office, Google Drive and Slack
Desirable skills
Proven (voluntary or otherwise) field experience in the humanitarian/non-profit sector, preferably in Greece
A TEFL/CELTA teaching certificate
Knowledge of any of these languages: Greek, Arabic, Farsi, Kurdi, French, Italian
Compensation
Shared accommodation will be provided. Additionally, we provide €687,50 gross monthly to cover day-to-day expenses.
COVID-19 safety procedures
Required testing and quarantine period dependent on Greek requirements and regulations. Once the country of origin is determined we will define an appropriate travel plan upon hire.
