United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability

Postgraduate Degree and Training (PDT) Programme

Through postgraduate education, UNU-IAS develops international leaders with the interdisciplinary understanding and technical skills needed to advance creative solutions to problems of sustainability. The institute offers master's and doctoral degree programmes, and innovative short courses, in close collaboration with leading universities in Japan and other countries.

Responsibilities

The consultant will promote education and training activities of UNU-IAS in line with the institute's Strategic Plan 2020-2024, in close communication with Academic Programme Officer, the SDG Universities Platform (SDG-UP) team, and UNU-IAS Communications team. In particular, the consultant will promote the SDG-UP project, the UNU-IAS postgraduate degree programmes, and other related training programmes. Under the overall supervision of the UNU-IAS Director and the Academic Director of the Postgraduate Degrees and Training (PDT) Programme, and the direct supervision of the Administrative Director of the PDT Programme, the Consultant will undertake the following tasks:

  • develop media and communication initiatives to increase the visibility of the institute's education and training activities, including the SDG-UP project and the UNU-IAS postgraduate degree programmes, in close coordination with the UNU-IAS Communications unit
  • plan, develop, and maintain a web presence for SDG-UP (as part of the UNU-IAS website), in close coordination with the UNU-IAS Communications unit and the UNU Office of Communications
  • develop and maintain an internal platform for sharing materials and information between member universities of the SDG-UP network
  • participate in SDG-UP workshops and other events
  • plan and produce a total of six promotional videos which feature key events and interviews related to SDG-UP activities and other PDT activities
  • plan and produce news stories, press releases, and promotional materials, and assist in translating their content between English and Japanese
  • ensure communications efforts and materials are aligned with the UNU-IAS Strategic Plan 2020-2024 and consistent with UNU and UNU-IAS branding
  • support the migration of UNU-IAS websites to the new UNU web platform
  • provide professional advice for public relations materials of other PDT programmes
  • promote key events mentioned above through social media and other means
  • perform other relevant activities and duties requested by the UNU-IAS Director

Required qualifications and experience

Required qualifications and experience include:

  • a bachelor's degree (or higher) in media and fine arts, media management and technology, film making, or other related fields
  • at least 7 years of experience in web design and platform development, creative media development, and public campaign and media strategies
  • experience in planning and functioning as a creative workshop facilitator
  • experience in working with international organisations and international NGOs is an asset
  • extensive experience managing content using WordPress; experience using HTML and the Adobe suite of creative products would be an advantage
  • excellent writing and communication skills both in English and Japanese
  • a good team player with strong interpersonal skills, demonstrated by the ability to work in a multicultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity
  • a professional network in environmental science and sustainable development

Remuneration

The daily fee of JPY 36,000 will be paid not exceeding the total remuneration of JPY 5,184,000 during the contract period. Remuneration shall be paid on a monthly basis upon submission of the attendance sheet and activity report considered satisfactory by the supervisor.

The expenses will be covered by UNU-IAS up to JPY 3,000,000 (JPY 500,000 x 6 projects) upon submission of receipt and supporting document duly verified by the supervisor.

There are no other fringe benefits.

Duration of contract

The successful candidate shall work under a Consultant Contract (CTC) at a rate of three days per week for the above-mentioned project. The contract shall commence in March 2021 and expire in March 2022 (12 months). No consultant shall provide services for more than twenty-four (24) months in a thirty-six (36) month period.

This is a locally recruited post; no relocation expenses or allowances apply. The successful candidate will be employed under a local contract and will not hold international civil servant status nor be a "staff member" as defined in the United Nations Staff Rules and Regulations. UNU does not sponsor a working visa for this position.
