Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking an intern for the Development and Outreach Department for its Stockholm office. The internship runs full time for 20 weeks, starting mid-January 2023. Internships are unpaid. Interns in Sweden must be an enrolled students for the duration of their internship term.

This internship is best suited for individuals interested in gaining experience within a small office of a large international non-profit organization. The intern will gain experience and skills in human rights outreach, communication, and advocacy. The internship offers flexibility and provides a comprehensive introduction to working in a human rights organization. Students will also have opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, professional development workshops, special events relating to human rights, as well as network with other HRW interns, volunteers, and employees. As an HRW intern, students will take skills acquired in school and apply them in a professional setting.

Due to COVID-19, many of our global offices are operating in reduced capacities. The successful candidate may be required to work remotely as local mandates necessitate. We recognize that this moment, during the pandemic, is a uniquely difficult time for most people, particularly those with caregiving responsibilities, and we aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment for and onboarding of this position. The office is located at the social impact hub, Norrsken House in central Stockholm. The team working at the Stockholm office is small, which means that the intern will quickly become a vital part of the team and work with a variety of tasks.

Responsibilities:

Some of the main tasks during the internship may include:

Outreach and fundraising: The intern will assist in HRW’s work of promoting and protecting human rights with a focus on outreach and fundraising activities. Furthermore, the intern will support the team by planning, organising, and evaluating events, mainly HRW’s flagship event Voices for Justice; help create content and strategy; draft documents and other correspondence related to donor outreach; learn how to operate the fundraising and donor management database; conduct prospect research; conduct desk research for development and outreach projects; and support the development of the HRW network of artists (Creators Society) and the network for younger supporters (Next Generation).

Communication and advocacy: Interns will assist with drafting social media posts and to help grow HRW’s social media presence. Interns will also help produce content and text for newsletters and invitations to events and seminars, as well as draft monthly communication reports. Moreover, the intern will support the Nordic Advocacy Director in our advocacy work. The intern will learn how to conduct human rights advocacy, promote HRW policy, summarise reports, and create targeted communication efforts.

Qualifications: Internships are unpaid. Interns in Sweden must be an enrolled student for the duration of their internship term. Coursework in a relevant area, such as human rights, media, communications, law, political science, or global studies is preferred. Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated, creative, flexible, and detail- oriented with excellent time management skills. Experience with collaborating within a team is desirable. Internet research skills and familiarity with MS Office programs, such as Word and Excel, are essential. The ideal candidate will have excellent written and oral communication skills in Swedish and English and a demonstrated interest in communication, fundraising, and human rights. .
