Responsibilities Under the direct supervision of the Programme and Administrative Head for the Postgraduate Degrees and Training (PDT) Programmes in collaboration with Academic Director for PDT, this Course Instructor is expected to develop and deliver the course “Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Systems (Remote Sensing) in the spring semester of the Academic Year of 2022/23 at UNU-IAS by undertaking the following tasks: 1. Development of the curriculum• Develop a syllabus for the course of Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Systems at the level of master and doctoral programmes in coordinating with faculty member and the PDT office; the course includes deliveries of fifteen classes (100 mins per class)2. Preparation in provision of educational materials and instructions• Identify appropriate educational resources available for the course that are relevant to the subject to be taught during the course• Prepare for lecture and teaching materials• Prepare for instruction of students before the delivery• Provide all the necessary materials for students including use of the UNU-IAS learning management system3. Delivery of the course and support to students• Deliver and manage the of the course of Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Systems• Monitor students’ learning progress and provide students with support as necessary for good understanding the subject to be taught during the course and improving their skills and capacities4. Assessment of the students and self-evaluation of the course• Timely complete evaluating students’ performance based on the assessment and requirements stipulated in the syllabus in accordance with the evaluation policy and regulations of UNU-IAS • Conduct self-analysis of the course delivery including the points of improvement for further development5. RequirementsEducation and certification Ph.D. in Engineering, Science, or other relevant field use of remote sensing and GIS (geographical information systems) Experience At least 5 years after a completion of doctoral degree and experiences at professional research and/or educational institutionsSignificant number of publications in natural science and engineering fields;Experience in teaching in geographical information systems (GIS) is required;Knowledge and technical expertise of remote sensing;Experience with communicating with system providers of GIS; Language Requirements Fluency in English is requiredCommunication skills in Japanese is desiredKnowledge of another UN official working language is an asset. Duration of contract 1 April 2023 – 31 August 2023 Proposed payment schedule A lump sum payment of JPY 154,994 – 172,215, inclusive of all fees, will be made upon satisfactory performance with submission of the delivery report, after the completion of student assessment by the contractor and Students’ Evaluation of Teaching (SET) conducted under the UNU-IAS regulation. A competitive compensation will be determined by selected candidate’s qualifications and experience. The instructor is expected to work 2 hours average per week. UNU-IAS shall reserve the right to withhold, in full or in part, the final payment if in its opinion the said the delivery are not satisfactory. The instructor is expected to deliver fifteen 90-minutes classes. ​Travel considerations Should “mission travel” be required, UNU will pay for travel. However, this will be subject to the following prerequisites: Medical Clearance, Security Clearance through the Travel Request Information Process (TRIP) system, completion of the BSAFE online course, travel Visa, and liability waiver. Trip prerequisites will be met at the expense of the consultant. Travel cost will be calculated based on economy class travel, regardless of the length of travel. Costs for accommodation, meals and incidentals must not exceed applicable daily subsistence allowance (DSA) rates, as promulgated by the International Civil Service Commission (ICSC at http://icsc.un.org).
