The Market Transitions to Enable New Growth Opportunities (MTENGO) project is a five year, USDA-funded project implemented by Winrock International in the Northern and Central regions of Malawi. MTENGO uses a farmer-first approach grounded in market incentives to increase resource-efficient, reliable production from Malawian agriculture in the face of climate unpredictability. MTENGO’s approach will enable farmers to: Diversify and achieve stable returns from their farming portfolio through climate smart farming by responding to market demands with diversified production; Increase access to water for productive purposes through improved water management practices; Make ecosystem services work for farmers by improving farmer access to, and collective management of, water, soil, and forest products; and Increase access to markets and finance so farmers can make climate smart investments. The Communications Specialist will implement MTENGO`s communication and dissemination actions, to share MTENGO’s achievements and impact to different internal and external audiences. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Oversees and coordinates all communication activities for the project and contributes to the development of a project communication strategy. Develops content for newsletters, success stories, infographics, and audio-visual materials to inform and educate stakeholders of MTENGO’s work. Ensures the timely release of communication materials including event press releases and maintains all web-based communication portals. Participates in field visits to document project activities and results and trains staff and partners on data capture for communication materials. Works with grantees and subcontractors to ensure their communications materials adhere to USDA requirements. Spearheads the documentation of best practices through case studies and other formats for dissemination. Provides writing, copy editing and communications support for technical staff, particularly in the preparation of regular reports to USDA (including semiannual and annual reports) and annual workplans, consolidating inputs from various writers, ensuring that the design and layout of the reports effectively communicates its content to all the recipients. Develop communication materials for activities and events for education and awareness-building, including webinars, trainings, and speaking engagements for the COP and technical staff. Participate in and support documentation of project collaborating, learning and adaption activities with the MTENGO team, partners, and key stakeholders. Perform other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS AND BACKGROUND: Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communication, Communication Research, Journalism, or a closely related field. Experience: Minimum 4 years’ experience in implementing communication activities; experience working in an agriculture-related/development project preferred. Experience working on USG funded projects, experience with USDA projects preferred. Experience working with Government Agencies and Private Sector. Demonstrated experience with mass media and communication and development of online content. Experience of working with technical experts to harness knowledge and expertise to support learning, collaboration and problem solving. Knowledge, Skill & Ability Requirements: Good understanding of different communication channels and platforms and the style and type of content needed to reach different target audiences. Strong writing and proofreading skills, with attention to detail. Ability to present complex information in a simple, creative, and visually engaging way. Ability to work as part of a team and have good interpersonal communication skills. Good Microsoft Office skills (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams).
