BACKGROUND:
Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction has over 100 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. Specifically, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction guides, monitors, analyses and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyzes action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with U.N. Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
This consultancy position is located in the UNDRR Regional Office for Africa. Under the direct supervision of the External Relations Officer, the consultant will perform the following duties:

• Develop a communications plan for the Regional Office.
• Draft post-event stories or articles that highlight the main take ways and messages of the event to serves as both a resource for those will missed the event and as a reference for documenting the Regional Office’s work.
• Upon being trained, update and maintain Regional Office’s content on the UNDRR website.
• Serve as in-house editor and proof-reader for material destined for external distribution, such as publications, policy input and reports.
• Manage the Regional Office’s social media accounts to promote upcoming events, highlight accomplishments and promote corporate messages.
• Liaise with journalists and media houses in the region to support coverage of the Regional Office initiatives.
• Support the collection, drafting or editing of talking points, reports, briefs, and presentations when requested.
• Write speeches for the Regional Office, that promote the goals of UNDRR and help advance the Sendai Framework.
• Support the development of a Communications dissemination and sensitization strategy for UNDRR project component of “Resilience building and Disaster Response Management in the Indian Ocean”
• Create graphics such as event banners for the UNDRR website and social media cards to promote events.
• Works closely with the Communications Section in Headquarters. Qualifications/special skills

Academic Qualifications: Master’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Development Studies, International Relations, Social Sciences, or a related field is required. First ­level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience: Minimum five (5) years’ experience in the field of journalism, communication, advocacy, external relations or related area is required. Experience working with international organizations or the UN is an asset.

Language: Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable.
