Back Communications Assistant (Video Production)

Organizational Setting

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is specialized agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to defeat hunger. Our goal is to achieve food security for all and make sure that people have regular access to enough high-quality food to lead active, healthy lives. The main aim of the FAO country offices, which are headed by an FAO Representative, is to assist governments to develop policies, programmes and projects to achieve food security by reducing hunger and malnutrition, developing the agricultural, fisheries and forestry sectors, and to use their natural resources in a sustainable manner. 

The Communications Assistant (Video Production) will assist FAO South Sudan in using audio/video materials to supplement education, training and promotional activities in various projects across the country. The activities will be carried out in partnership with local media organizations and involve collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries. 

Reporting Lines

The Communications Assistant (Video Production) works under the general supervision of the FAO Representative in South Sudan and under direct supervision of the Capacity Building Specialist.

Technical Focus 

The communications assistant is responsible for developing, planning, producing and distributing video programmes. The assistant also facilitate in negotiating and forming partnerships with local media, training local journalists to implement FAO programming and conducting monitoring and evaluation activities with the beneficiaries. The communications assistant will work closely with the Radio Programming Assistant to share topic and materials to assist in production of both video and radio programming. 

•    Production of a weekly television programme for broadcast on several platforms
•    Collection of footage from FAO field locations across the South Sudan and organization into a searchable database
•    Close collaboration and support of radio production activities on the same topic each week
•    Organization of viewing sessions for training and monitoring and evaluation purposes

Tasks and responsibilities

Duties of the Communications Assistant (Video Production) include: 

•    The officer-in-charge of the video production should liaise with OCC at the appropriate stages for distribution and publication of the video products
•    Videos should follow the FAO Video production guideline:

•    Planning and developing video programmes, including programme scripts;
•    Choosing topics in collaboration with FAO technical experts and the Radio Programming Assistant;
•    Shooting video of selected topics, including expert interviews and farmers demonstrating techniques in the field;
•    Editing video to produce a weekly magazine-style programme; 
•    Liaising with videographers at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to collect content in field locations around the country;
•    Uploading completed episodes to;
•    Training and assisting ministry videographers to implement video programming according to FAO style and standards;
•    Creating a searchable archive of raw footage and competed episodes;
•    Producing short promotional videos for use on FAO South Sudan’s social media channels;
•    Organizing and facilitating viewing sessions with beneficiaries for training and monitoring and evaluation purposes;  
•    Collaborating with local NGOs including those which are FAO’s implementing partners for various projects, to identify interviewees with appropriate expertise;  
•    Preparing reports on programme activities;
•    Produce feature stories (print/Web) about agriculture in South Sudan;
•    Photographing programme activities in all locations and compiling photos;
•    Developing successful stories on different program activities from beneficiaries in various locations including both men and women;
•    Performing other related duties as required. 

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

•    Diploma in Journalism, Mass Communication, Public Relations or other social sciences. A Bachelor’s degree will be an added advantage;
•    Minimum 4 years of relevant experience in video and television programming, particularly related to agriculture, livestock and/or general food and nutrition security 
•    Working knowledge of English
•    National of South Sudan

Technical/Functional Skills 
 
•    Strong capacity to shoot video on professional video cameras including Sony XD cameras;
•    Strong capacity to edit video to a professional standard;
•    Demonstrated creativity and innovation in video/television programming;
•    Experience writing scripts for video/television production;
•    Excellent writing and presentation skills;
•    Proven experience and ability to work with rural communities and community mobilization;
•    Experience in production in other mediums (radio, photography) will be considered an asset;
•    Fluency in English.

Selection Criteria 

•    Knowledge of humanitarian principles;
•    Ability to work and plan at operational levels;
•    Ability to work in insecure areas;
•    Knowledge of another language of the Organization would be an asset.
