BACKGROUND

Eswatini faces critical development challenges due to poverty levels, high prevalence of stunting, food insecurity and the impact of HIV/AIDS. Through its five years Country Strategic plan, WFP is supporting the government respond to the socio-economic problems by providing technical support to various line ministries including DPMO, Health, Agriculture, Tinkundla and Education ministries among others.

JOB PURPOSE

To implement the communication plan by supporting and delivering a range of communication activities, providing research and anlysis, and prioritising effectively.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

Under the overall guidance of the Head of Office and direct supervision of the Head of Programme, The Communications Assistant will be responsible for the following:

  • Implement country specific communication work plans designed to mantan andenhance the visibility and reputation of WFP, as well as support fund raising activities, ensuring alignment with overall communications and WFP strategies.
  • Contribute to cimmunications through good research, analysis of assigned area of work and timely preparation and distribution of information products to target audience(s).
  • Maintain a contact list of journalists and media outlets and support the flow of news/information about WFP's work to the media, in order to support regular and appropriate communications.
  • Support the social media plan by devloping social media content, and utilising platforms, networks and partners to enhance coverage and support WFP activities.
  • Generate donor specific visibility content including, text, photos, videos and audio for use across a range of integrated online platforms, in order to support global and country fund-raising activities, ensuring consistency with corporate messages.
  • Monitor and analyse traditional and social media to inform the development and/or evaluation of communication activities and strategies. This involve monitoring and corordinating communication materials, schedules and clearances including supporting special events.
  • Collate outreach data, contribute to the preparation of accurate and timely reports. Support communications activies that enable informed decision making and ensures consistency of information presented to the media and other stakeholders.
  • Support capacity building of WFP staff on all aspects of communication, provides advice and guidance within area and level of expertise, in order to ensure that all activities meet desired standards of consistency, quality and impact. For example, the design and review of training materials.
  • Liaise and interact with WFP staff and external counterparts to support aligned activities and a coherent approach to communications within WFP.
  • Follow standard emergency preparedness practices to suppot WFP to quickly respond and deploy food and needed resources to affected areas at the onset of a crisis.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned.

STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Certificate or Diploma in journalism, International Relations, Public Relations, Communications or any other relavant field.

Language: Fluency in both oral and written communication in English and Siswati languages.

EXPERIENCE FOR ENTRY INTO THE ROLE:

  • A minimum of three years work experience in communication or related work experience.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Has gained experience in utilizing special communications techniques to enhance functional outputs.
  • Has provided direction and instruction to junior staf members within area of expertise.
  • Ability to work in a team and establish effective working relationships with people of different nationalities and culture.
  • Good time planning, analytical and writing skills.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Communication and negotiation skills.
