3 Months Duties and Responsibilities

1. Organizational Setting, Purpose and Objective:
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The Regional Office for West Asia delivers advisory services and capacity building support to countries to achieve environment and sustainable development objectives in West Asia. UNEP works closely with governments, industry, and civil society organizations around the world to develop mainstream solutions for the sound management of chemicals and waste.
The Global Environment Facility (GEF) provided funding for Iraq to develop the National Implementation Plan (NIP) for the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and the Minamata Initial Assessment (MIA) for the Minamata Convention on mercury. UNEP West Asia Office, as the executing agency for the project, provides the necessary technical assistance for Iraq to fulfil the Minamata and Stockholm Convention requirement, serve as a platform for information and experience sharing at the regional level and enhance support to awareness and decision making leading to the protection of human health and the environment. Within the framework of this project, the NIP and MIA report has been developed as part of the deliverables under the project.
This TOR is for a part time consultant to work on reviewing the Arabic language of the NIP and translate the MIA report to Arabic, as well as translate the booklet summary of the NIP to Arabic. The Consultant will report to the activity leader on chemicals in West Asia Office.

2. Duties and Responsibilities:
The Consultant will carry-out the following duties & responsibilities:
1. Translating and Formatting of the MIA to Arabic
- Translate the English version of the MIA to Arabic
- Formatting of the MIA
2. Review and Formatting of the NIP
- Review the language (Arabic) of the NIP
- Formatting of the NIP
3. Translating the Summary Booklet of the NIP
- Translate the developed booklet (approximately 10-pager) that provides a summary of the NIP that will include infographics. Qualifications/special skills

Master’s (or higher) in Environmental Sciences or fields related to environmental policies, chemical and waste, Journalism or equivalent is required
Minimum of 5 years’ experience working in the environmental field preferably on communication is required
Strong research and excellent writing skills in Arabic is required
Familiarity with chemicals conventions and their compliance frameworks is an asset Languages

Proficiency in English and Arabic is required
