POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to Senior Director of Research, the Associate Research Scientist (Global Health Pediatric Technical Advisor for Optimization) develops and leads projects related to and working in close collaboration with ICAP country teams, ICAP unit leads, Quality Improvement project team leads, Columbia University staff associated as needed per project and ICAP-associated health facility management and staff.

MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Lead the design, planning and supervise execution of ICAP strategies to scale-up high-quality effective interventions to prevent and treat HIV and other poverty-related illnesses
  • Develop and coordinate an interdisciplinary team of Columbia University experts to provide technical guidance to relevant national and sub-national health managers to improve quality of healthcare using health systems strengthening approaches (community of practice)
  • Coordinate and collaborate with regional networks of health professionals to develop and support a community of practice to advance sustainable child health programming
  • Conduct rapid needs assessments and lead or design outreach efforts in the communities in which ICAP operates
  • Providing input to ICAP strategy for technical response to pharmaceutical supply chain challenges and other child-health related projects
  • Provide technical supervision related to HIV treatment and general child health to country technical leads
  • Coaching and providing technical support to junior and non-technical staff as needed
  • Lead the design, planning and implementation of ICAP health-commodity introduction related activities in resource limited settings
  • Supervise junior staff conducting project implementation and research activities in the field
  • Provide support to ICAP implementation and surveillance research activities to ensure maximum benefit to the communities in which ICAP operates
  • Contribute as an ICAP’s representative to global working groups related to child health as needed.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, partners and other key stakeholders
  • Oversee or conduct country or regional needs assessments and develop or refine context-specific launch plans for new health-related commodities
  • Support ICAP’s mission and vision by leading activities such as trainings, meetings, sensitizations, and workshops with country level partners and stakeholder
  • Develop or support ICAP materials such as case studies, programmatic reports, landscape mapping and analysis, implementation guidance and training material
  • Develop and disseminate compelling evidence and rationale for practical policy change at global, regional, and country levels including journal articles, communication materials, policy briefs, fact sheets, early morning webinars, etc.
  • Foster strong communication and participate in meetings with stakeholders on optimization of child health and development to effectively develop and implement project work plans.
  • Contribute to grant management and reporting processes
  • Perform other duties as assigned

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to adjust to flexible travel schedules and remotely work across time zones as needed

EDUCATION:

  • PhD, Medical Degree or equivalent degree and training in General Pediatrics

EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 15+ years of related work experience
  • 15+ years’ experience working on international public health project either at the headquarters of international organizations
  • Experience in clinical management of general pediatric and HIV-specific care
  • Experience working with national working groups in developing plans and/or national guidelines and tools
  • Excellent understanding of public health approach to effectively introduce and scale sustainable new health interventions
  • Excellent interpersonal, writing and verbal communication s
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with donors or investors
  • Demonstrated and successful experience working in multi-cultural environments
  • Demonstrated and successful experience working independently and as part of a team with strong problem-solving skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (e.g., POWERPOINT, Excel, Word, etc.

EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Understanding of issues related to access to quality healthcare in resource-limited settings
  • Ability to work across or in collaboration with non-health related disciplines
  • Experience in global and national health policy adoptions and adaptation at local levels
  • Experience working with US Government donors and PEPFAR-funded recipients
  • Experience working with UN, The Global Fund or other related organizations
  • French or Portuguese language skills a plus
