The position is to be filled as soon as possible, with an initial contract duration of one year. There are good prospects for an extension. Employment location will be Nyamlel, Northern Bahr el Gazal, South Sudan, with extensive travel to the field offices in the area and regular trips to Juba.

We are looking for a seasoned leader with multi-year global experience in teams and livelihoods-oriented programme management in conflict-affected contexts to provide leadership to the overall implementation of Welthungerhilfe (WHH) South Sudan strategy in the region, ensuring high quality of project implementation and compliance with global and WHH standards and procedures. You will ensure that the necessary resources, including various projects’ funds, are secured and used efficiently and effectively by the respective Heads of Projects. As Area Manager, you will report to the Country Director and work closely with the Head of Programmes and Sectoral Leads, as well as with Head of Finance and Head of Logistics.

In order to support staff during their deployment to South Sudan and ensuring their safety despite the challenging conditions, strict security measures are put in place and regular Rest and Recreation leave is mandatory (8-weeks cycle for the project locations).

Your responsibilities

Your profile

  • A university or polytechnic degree in Economic Development, Rural Development, Agriculture, Agribusiness, or equivalent qualifications that are commensurate with this position

  • At least 5 years of project and management experience in carrying out transitional programmes with international aid agencies

  • A minimum of 3 years experience in a Head of Office/Area Manager position

  • Global work experience, preferably in a conflict-related context - Working experience in South Sudan would be an asset

  • Various international donor experience - BMZ donor experience is an asset

  • Extensive Financial, Human Resources and Administration management experience

  • Working experience with digital solutions for operational efficiency and database systems would be an advantage

  • Excellent understanding of humanitarian architecture and coordination systems

  • Coordination, organisational skills and ability to work with minimal supervision - even under a high workload

  • Team-focused approach, with advanced coaching and mentoring skills and capacity building experience

  • A high level of mental and physical resilience and readiness to travel to areas with volatile local conditions

  • Excellent spoken and written English, Arabic or German language skills would be an asset
