Duties

The anaesthetist is a member of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) obstetrical team, which responds to gynaecological and obstetrical emergencies and operates in the gynaecological-obstetrical hospital department.

The incumbent will work closely with the other team members: the obstetrician-gynaecologist, the operating room nurse and the mobile midwife.

He/she will supervise and train ICRC and/or national resident physicians and/or nurses assigned to work with him/her.

General Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Nana Gribizi District Hospital (NGDH) project leader and in collaboration with the obstetrician-gynaecologist, the anaesthetist will coordinate the operation theatres’ activities with the hospital health team.

He/she will evaluate the local situation and capacity for anaesthesia and develop a training strategy for risk-free anaesthesia, whose duration will take into account the personnel’s workload and limitations (untrained, unqualified).

The ultimate goal of the incumbent will be to implement medium to long term solutions aiming to build the national and/or ICRC resident teams’ capacities to address obstetric emergencies at NGDH.

He/she will respond to obstetric emergencies according to ICRC anaesthesia standards, protocols and guidelines.

He/she will provide training and transfer skills relating to anaesthetic practices used during obstetric emergencies to the Ministry physician and/or nurse and/or the ICRC resident physician (depending on the situation).

He/she will oversee the anaesthesia and pre/post surgical care of patients, primarily in the recovery room, in collaboration with the obstetrical team.

He/she will contribute to the stabilization and pain management of surgical patients being transferred to Bangui (Medevac), in collaboration with the hospital project leader.

Main Tasks

Technical Support and Training

  • Implement anaesthesia protocols before, during and after procedures according to international and ICRC protocols.
  • Participate in post-operative consultations with the obstetrician-gynaecologist, midwife and NGDH national and/or resident staff.
  • Handle emergency resuscitation and anaesthesia cases.
  • Work in collaboration with national and resident operating room staff (sterilization, post-operative care, emergencies, etc.) and other NGDH departments personnel.
  • Implement an ongoing education plan in adaptive obstetric anaesthesia emergencies management for NGDH physicians and/or nurses.
  • Be available during emergencies, as required, to support the hospital team (24/7).
  • Collaborate with the project leader and the project’s other mobile physicians and nurses to implement a contingency plan for NGDH.
  • Facilitate the collection of information related to anaesthetic, gynaecological and obstetrical activity in collaboration with the NGDH’s obstetrician-gynaecologist and mobile midwife.
  • Contribute to the documentation of maternal death cases in order to prepare the mortality/morbidity review, in collaboration with the obstetrician-gynaecologist, the midwife and the project leader.

Administration/Management

  • Participate in project and sub-delegation meetings and other meetings related to the needs of the project and the services he/she provides.
  • Contribute to medical and other reports (WOR-BOR-QHTR-MAD).
  • Participate in patient data collection, analyse situations and events and prepare treatment plans, exit records and death certificates.
  • Complete inventories and order materials and medications for the department he/she oversees.
  • Supervise the proper use of the equipment and medications specific to his/her practice.
  • Assess human resources, materials and medications needed in the operating room in collaboration with the mobile midwife and the obstetrician-gynaecologist recommended to the project leader.
  • Evaluate opportunities for training abroad for selected candidates as well as internal training with MSF or other organizations.

Location of Workplace

The anaesthetist will be based in Kaga Bandoro.

Other Information

He/she will be part of NGDH health team and work closely with various team members while interacting/collaborating with other health program colleagues as required.

Core Competencies Required for the Position

  • Experience in general anaesthesia and/or obstetrics
  • Experience in emergency gynaecology and obstetrics an asset
  • Experience working with international NGOs and/or the ICRC an asset
  • Ability to coach, train and pass on skills to staff holding little or no qualifications
  • Ability to work in a volatile environment, in infrastructures equipped with basic equipment and little or no qualified staff
  • Ability to live in a confined space with little mobility and to work within a multicultural team
