MEXICO VOLUNTEER

Closing Date: 24 January 2020

Directorate: Regional Offices and Global Operations

Location: Mexico City

Type: Volunteer

A volunteer vacancy for the Mexico team is available at our Americas Regional Office, based in Mexico City. This position will support the Mexico team in a wide range of research, campaigns, communications and administrative activities related to both strategic projects and reactive work in the country.

The opportunity to collaborate in one of the world’s leading human rights organisations can provide valuable professional experience and the chance to achieve meaningful impact on the lives of people around the world.

We are looking for a highly qualified and motivated candidate who is available part time for an ideal period of 6 months. Please note that this position is not paid (although a small stipend for food and transportation is provided) and does not directly lead to employment at Amnesty International. Volunteers are responsible for arranging their own Mexican visa before arriving in Mexico, if required.

We would look for the successful candidate to meet the following requirements:
* Interest in and knowledge about human rights issues in Mexico.
* An undergraduate degree in Law, International Relations, Political Science, Social Sciences, History, Anthropology or a related field.
* Excellent written and spoken English and Spanish.
* Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, and online tools.
* Good inter-personal and communication skills for working in a diverse and multidisciplinary team.
* Great capacity for collecting, analysing and synthesising both qualitative and quantitative information.
* Ability to multi-task and to work proactively with minimum supervision.
* Willingness to undertake office work like photocopying, filing and archiving.
* Previous professional experience on human rights issues on Mexico will be considered an asset.

The successful candidate’s task list may include the following:
* Research support. Collect and systematize diverse information on human rights issues in Mexico from a wide range of sources. This could entail searching for information online or speaking with authorities or NGOs, for example, in order to support the development of research outputs.
* Press monitoring. We monitor human rights issues and developments on both international and local media daily. Selected articles are then filed electronically into databases with important news items forwarded to team members by email. Volunteers are responsible for this task.
* Campaigns support. Amnesty International is a campaigning movement, which seeks to mobilize people around the world to speak out for change. Volunteers may be involved in supporting the team in the implementation of its campaigns.
* Communications, correspondence and administrative support. Volunteers may be asked to provide administrative support to the team, such as arranging meetings with authorities or external partners, sending correspondence by mail or electronically, and keeping contact and other databases up to date. They may also be asked to support travel arrangements for team members that need to travel for work.
