Act to End Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) | East Tanzania program is a five-year project funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) that helps national NTD control programs for the control and elimination of five targeted NTDs: lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis, schistosomiasis, soil-transmitted helminths, and trachoma.

Job Summary

The Accountant based in Dar es Salaam is responsible for the day-to-day accounting function for the Act to End NTDs | East (Act | East) Tanzania and Strategic Investment Fund (SIF) programs. The Accountant, who directly reports to the Senior Finance & Grants Manager, is responsible for posting transactions in QuickBooks, monthly reconciliation of staff advances, VAT receivables and tax liabilities. She/he is expected to utilize appropriate systems and follow proper accounting procedures to disburse, account for, and report usage of funds. The position requires frequent travel up to 40% of the time and will spend approximately 50% of their time on Act | East and 50% on SIF.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Prepare payment vouchers in support of payments for project activities and suppliers invoices confirming such payments are: in accordance with the laid down procedures and policies, accurate, complete, adequately supported by all underlying appropriate documents, correctly coded to appropriate expenses and tracking code and project code.
  • Maintain custody of the office cash (small payments only), handle all matters related to day-to day petty cash management including preparation of cash vouchers for reimbursement, making payments to recipients, preparing summaries and reconciliations for replenishment of petty cash fund.
  • Process staff travel advances and expense reports, consultant’s payments, and other related costs
  • Disperse payments for workshops/trainings, consultants and other related costs as per RTI International policy.
  • Process checks and wire transfers to suppliers and employees accounting/keep track of expenses and other financial transactions, mainly involving expense entry, tracking and record keeping.
  • Prepare and reconcile monthly income tax, pension, provident fund and withholding taxes and physically effect payment to tax office prior to deadlines.
  • Prepare journal vouchers or adjusting entries for necessary reviews and approvals.
  • Provide support to the Senior Finance & Grants Manager in compiling and submission of the monthly financial reports package.
  • Update the Fixed Asset/Equipment records (asset management), conduct periodic counts and prepare annual fixed report.
  • In collaboration with the Procurement & Logistics Officer, support collection and filing for logistics (accommodations, transport, vehicles) invoices, receipts and payments.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by supervisor.

    Minimum Required Education and Experience

    • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Finance/Commerce and minimum 4 years of working experience in accounting and/or financial field.
    • Experience of working in an international NGO and projects funded by USAID is preferable
    • Excellent knowledge of MS Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel
    • Excellent knowledge of accounting systems e.g., QuickBook
    • Ability to multi-task & work well with others.
    • Ability to listen and communicate well both verbally and in writing.
    • Ability to work independently.
    • Attention to detail and accuracy.
